Windy Ride

We ride in crosswinds down here almost all the time, depending on season and roads we are riding. weighting the peg works, as well as moving your butt over to the edge of the seat away from the wind and letting the bike lean into the wind. Helps with gusts and when passing other vehicles. It all depends on the winds. Today we had 32mph with gusts to 43 or something like that. Fun riding, but not the most relaxing...

The Busa is certainly better than the early 90's Zuk's GSXR & Katana.  Those got thrown around like rag dolls.  Highier center of gravity.

Santa Ana winds here. I love riding in the wind. Constant corrections. Wind so strong, you are maybe at a 15-18 percent lean angle trying to stay in lane... the wind is that strong. Love the rain too. Ride even faster in the wet then dry.
Ever play dodge-ball with tumble weed? Some get to be 5-6 feet round. One coming at you from the side is all about timing. Either brake, or throttle up to avoid it. Hitting one is a pain. They are so brittle, they disintegrate tinier than dropping a Christmas ball. Thing is, you have to pull over to remove all the stickers (ouch!) embedded in your jeans and jacket.

Here's the thing though. Anytime a conversation about wind is brought up, I'm always reminded of this:
The same windy corroder that I use every single day, reminds me of a Hollywood stuntman going to work on his bike. Seems that windy (late 1980's?) day, he never made it to work. He died from a wind gust. Took him right out.

I seem to get buffeted a lot in heavy traffic like say, Atlanta. Can you do something to the suspension to help out with the wind?? Maybe lower the bike??

there are winds that average 30 mph, about 4-5 days a week where I live. So some days it is close to 40 mph. I use to get blown around on the highway on my Busa until I installed a double-bubble windscreen. Even if the wind hits you directly from the side, You no longer get blown around with it on. I tested it by swapping between the oem windscreen, and you will see a huge difference.

Also, it's better to ride with a tight fitting leather jacket rather then a textile. The wind slips past you without moving your body and bike. If you downshift a gear and get the RPM's around 5-6k, it creates a gyro effect which makes the bike more stable.

Since it's always windy, I have no choice but to ride in it, so the more you ride, the less puckering you get.

I ride with one hand and a loose pucker no matter how windy it gets now!!!

jwcfbd, You need to lean over a little more and let your arms relax and become shock absorbers. It also helps in the heavy sidewinds relax and don't fight your bike and you'll have more fun! At school they want you to be able to flap your arms like a duck, try it.

Cross winds suck azz. Big time.

They were the first contributing factor to my wreck....

Yea, generally steady 10 mph (which we consider calm) with gust 15 mph on calm days. Windy days, 10 -15 steady with gust from 25 mph to 35 mph. And that's year round, but yea, we do have calm days, just not many ! I use to tell new pilots that if they didn't like cross wind landings, don't go to Oklahoma.

Me
ss011.gif
, I love it or maybe I am just use to it. What I don't like is the 15 to 20 mph steady with gust to 30 mph with the temps in the low 30's or high 20's. Then it's in the -0 F stuff while riding
poke.gif
, or the 110 F in the summer (that's in the sun, Oklahoma lies

about their temps and says the highs are only in the 90's in the summer, but that's in the shade).
He hit it right on the head. I live just a few miles from Oklahoma and do most of my riding there. KS + OK suck when it comes to wind.

Calm days per year can be counted on one hand.

I think the Busa is rock solid compared to my old R1. That light ####### would blow everywhere.

I remember taking that pic JW!

We had some gusty crosswinds tonight on the way home from work. 40 is about max for gusting crosswinds more than that I take the truck.

If you don't like windy conditions and cross winds, DON'T COME TO OKLAHOMA

Being an Okie myself I can attest that yes, it is windy.

But only cause Kansas blows and Texas sucks.

It's always windy in Texas too. Feels like the wind is pushing the tires sideways from under you. The bike doesn't move that much, it just feels creepy.
