Gen 3 valve check Did you have it done?

Has anyone had their valve service done on a Gen 3? I'm curious if you have were any of the valves out of spec? Also who hasn't had the valves checked and has gone way past the recommended mileage? I've never actually had the valves done on any of the bikes I've owned but since I'm keeping this bike hopefully forever I want to know if there is any trend one way or the other. Thanks!

Most bikes out there never had the valve clearance adjusted. Yeah, you should do it according to scheduled maintenance but I wouldn't worry a bit if you're passed due on it. The bike I checked and adjusted was exactly the same when I checked it the second time. The valves wear in and they pretty much stay that way the rest of their life. ...but yes do it when you can just to be safe. Who wants to ride a bike that never had the valve clearance adjusted?

Even the old bikes rarely had valves go out of adjustment...

A friend of mine asked me to check the valves on his GSXR1100 (screw adjusters...easy) that bike had 200,000kms and had never had a valve adjustment (they were checked once at the dealer as part of a service)....all the valves were bang on when I checked them...

He rode the ever loving crap out of that thing but looked after it, always did oil changes and was often waxed...

Speaking of which, I should reach out to him and see if he still has that thing....

I'm only at about 5,000 miles so it'll be a little bit before I need them checked. I think the interval is 12,000 miles if I'm not mistaken.

I loooooove those old GSXR-1100s! Those the 750 Slingshots and the SRAD 750s were my dream bikes as a kid.

I had two '85 GSXRS, one was a factory race bike and I bought it's twin to ride on the street....

There was just something about their rawness that made them so great.....they were almost angry.

I'm from Sarasota originally and Johnny Dorbin (turbo Johnny) from Exoticyce did some scary fast passes on those old 1100s. They were all boosted for the most part of course lol.

Yeah, valve check used to be 16k mikes on the Gen2, and most modern 4 cylinders prior, but the '17-'24 Gsxr1k's are 12k now, and I thought they moved the Gen3 down to that as well.
Who knows why, maybe pushing dealer business, as they still take forever to go out of spec.

That's kind of what I figured I'd hear. Modern bikes are built to better tolerances. I was just curious about peoples findings if they'd had them checked. I will probably do the first one, if everything is in spec I won't worry about it again. My biggest concern is the bike not being put back together correctly and there being leaks or something.

I've never had a valve out of in any bike I owned....even my GSXR race bike spending as much time as it did at high rpm never had any valve clearance issues.....

I'm not saying it never happens but not to me.......so far.......although this is my last bike so hopefully it stays true....

I had 3 out of spec on a zx7 of mine, which was an easy one, with a little room to work between the frame rails.
I've swapped them on a few bikes.
My '03 Gsxr1k"s where all right in the middle, except one exhaust valve was getting close to being out, but with .002 to go, I wasn't about to pull the cam(s).

The entire series of oil cooled Suzuki engines with the screw type adjusters made valve checks alot easier......

Adjusting bucket and shims kind of trouble me as I've never had to do one........yet......I've checked the tolerances but have yet to change a shim...

It's actually very easy.
I just hate timing the engines, as it's hard to see cam gear marks at a good angle next to the frame rail.
But, I ziptie the cams to their gears and use a little white-out to mark a tooth on each to the chain.
Then reset the tensioner, rotate the engine a few times, double check the marks, and good to go.
I've also put a couple bolts in a valve cover, made any connections to run, and started the bike for a few seconds just to make sure.
Then cleaned and rtv siliconed the gasket, and torqued the valve cover.
The main thing is having a shim kit before you start, so you can do it all at once.
I have been able to swap shims between 2 valves and put them both back in spec too, sometimes you get lucky.
