This might be a repost...

First a five year old is handcuffed by the same department... for unruly behaviour... Now a 13 year old... I have mouthed off to a police officer as a kid... Is it illegal to be disrespectful? Not even sure if she was. I can't tell from the vid. But my question is... Is it necassery to arm lock a 13 year old for maybe throwing a golf ball out a bus window? She didn't even do it... any thoughts?

13 yr old handcuffed

didn't know that... I should have been arrested numerous times as a teen.

I was always a wise a$$... The only time I was quiet and respectful was when I was guilty:laugh:

It's not illegal to be disrespectful. Obstruction of justice is lying or preventing them physically from doing their job. You can say, or call them whatever you want, but I usually wait til I'm already hooked before I start mouthing......

If you show a lack of respect for the authorities, and you're trying to look like a badass to impress your friends, then you deserve whatever you get. No matter how young/old you are.

Cops are going to continue to do this kind of crap simply because they can get away with it.
Handcuff kids, beat handcuffed suspects ... basically abuse their power. The problem is, nobody polices the police. I saw a video of the 5 year old girl being handcuffed, and I have heard about a 11 or 12 year old getting pepper sprayed. In one of those 2 instances the cop's punishment was suspension with pay ... or as we regular folks call it, a vacation!

Yeah, that'll teach 'em ...

The last one I saw put on suspension quit during the 2 weeks and just went away. Sad to say but no one, even his peers were bothered by his leaving the area. Popular opinion was that he still needed to grow up a little. And develope some character.

these are the kids that will be shooting cops, and their friends in school without blinking. SOMEONE has to teach them respect for authority when parents obviously don't. Mouth off to someone carrying a gun? ? ?

BRING BACK CANING!!!

I agree with you. What's stopping the cops from doeing things like this when the punishment is just a slap on the wrist. I tell you one thing if they every do that to my son....That will be the last child the cop hand cuff!

Let the kid talk all the trash she wants. As long as there is no contact. She seems to have had very little taught to her at home. So she won't go far. Just another future indigent. The story may not be telling all of the situation. However, the Leo should shown more restraint. Cuffing the girl helped nothing. Just made the kids more excited. Call for the Juvenile unit and let them handle it.

Actually the girl was/is an honor roll student... She was on The Today show this morning and seemed pretty articulate as did her parents and more importantly their attorney. I think 99% percent of the Law enforcement professionals make the right decision... But this department seems to be sucking hind teat. They are the same ones who cuffed the five year old.

Until you have been in the situation you really shouldnt comment.... How many of you have the luxury of a long time to make daily work decisions, most law enforcement have seconds or just minutes to create a plan.... Unless you were there its difficult to answer what should have been done... For those that think that you should call someone else or send them to juvenile hall you might be watching too much friggin TV. Often times you cant get anyone to take the juvenile or there is no one to call, you are 911....... Often times you have to go with your experiences, 9 out of 10 times in the same situation in that neighborhood the kids might be agressive and have in the past hurt someone... You saw the one in ten, the officer did what he felt was necessary. I would suggest to all of you that find law enforcement so easy to arm chair quarter back to look into the reserve program in your local area.

I have found it amazing how folks think they have all the answers when it comes to how to handle a law enforcement situation but they would never second guess a firefighter on how he handles a house fire or a paramedic who is starting an IV. Maybe folks are disillusioned by what they think they know about law enforcement.

Remember there is always more to the story than the media lets out.

The media spins info to sell their product. I know thats a generalization and also an opinion.

Firefighters and paramedics don't carry guns or handcuffs. Nor do they generally make decisions about who to arrest. So no I would have to agree that I don't usually second guess or arm chair quarterback people who have those jobs. Having been in the military and in combat I have made some pretty quick decisions that have saved lives. Not to say that is the same thing... BUT... I think anyone can comment on anything... If the cop felt so threatend why did he walk all the way down the bus without his firearm out and trained on the girl... Why walk inot the middle of all these kids... HE handcuffed her because he thought she was to mouthy! Once again... I think 99% of LEO make the right decisions! And I reserve the right to comment on anything I want!

Heck.....I think the hand cuffs were a good idea. We need a little more stuff like that going on in today's society. The cops didn't hurt the girl or anything. You can't even discipline a child today without getting into trouble for abuse. That is rediculous. That is one of the reasons crime and stuff is so high.....cause they know that there isn't anything the law can or will do, and they had no discipline as a child.

I remember when I was around 14 or 15, my brother and I were walking into our High school. There was a Chesapeake police officer in the parking lot. The police officer began to pick with us. He made very rude comments. Now there were only the 3 of us in the parking lot. To this day I still don't know what brought about those comments. I have my suspicions that it was due to race and the fact that we went to a majority white high school.

With that being said, we didn't just let him run his mouth! We both spoke back! Badge or no badge there was almost a physical confrontation until out white friends came out and inquired into what was happening. Don’t you know that office, simple drove away. That left a very bad taste in my mouth. Needless to say my uncle was/is the city manager and we never had any further problems.

Now, I don’t think that all officers are bad (my cousin is an officer on the Richmond City police force). I know a bunch of PG County Officers that ride. I do think there are a FEW officers that abuse their authorities and privileges like other folk with similar positions. They are the ones that give all officers a bad name.

I, also, think there are officers that may not know how to deal with situations like the ones mentioned. They are people just like you and I. They have just had a few days of some specialized training. So I don’t think that they should be excused when they put hand cuffs on a 5 yr old girl. If I put hand cuffs on my 5 yr old child, then that would be child abuse.Who can she hurt? How can she hurt anyone? That’s ridiculous.

I make a point out of never saying anything out of the ordinary to a cop who has stopped me. It's a no win situation. You could get the crap beat out of you with the officer saying you attacked him. Or, the cop could drag your butt to the Justice of the Peace to pay your fine right then with your motorcycle going to the impound.

Better to grin and bear it.

Maybe if more people made their children responsible for their actions then the LEO wouldn't have to. If one of my kids acted that way to a LEO, being handcuffed by the officer would be the least of their worries. You make mistakes as a kid and a adult for that matter, by be a man about it and take responsibility for your actions. The parents should be more worried about why their daughter stood up and started shouting at the officer, but of course she did absolutly nothing wrong at all. Just my thoughts
