2024 Pashnit Touring on a Hayabusa

Nice shots Tim. Having lived in San Jose for 16 years I’ve ridden all those roads but it’s been 7 years since I moved and I haven’t been back. Mt. Tam is a great ride if traffic allows and the road up to and past Mt. Ham’s observatory east of San Jose is a great ride too.

So the Point Bonita Lighthouse was a bust. Not open, will have pay more attention to the hours if we try to go there again.
The Point Bonita Lighthouse is famous that it overlooks the entrance to San Francisco Bay, but it's almost always foggy here too.

But if you have good luck with minimal fog... amazing shots

Third Peak of the day is nearby via Ridgecrest Blvd headed up to Bolinas Ridge - This third peak is directly north of the Golden Gate Bridge & a twisty ride to the summit via one of my all-time favorite roads.

Both Mark & I had been to Mount Tamalpais peak many times so we skipped that and headed for lighthouse #3 in the same day.

Bolinas Ridge - I've mentioned this road many times, it's one of my favorites, it looks straight down on the ocean.

The summit of Mount Tamalpais - we skipped this 3rd peak, but got within a few miles of the peak. My main intent of riding up near the peak was to get a sense of timing- how long it takes to get from A to B.

Getting a clear day view of downtown San Francisco from Mount Tamalpais without fog is rare.

Fire lookout atop the summit of Mount Tamalpais is still there , although no longer manned.

But the view of downtown San Francisco & Alcatraz island in the middle of the bay is perfect some days. What a view!

We made it to our third peak of the day, but I was also trying to ride to three lighthouses in one day.

The third lighthouse was nearby on the tip of the Point Reyes seashore, a broad peninsula that juts out into the ocean.

We made it to the Point Reyes Lighthouse - this place is famous for fog. It's the foggiest place in the entire United States. If you can visit with no fog, it's a lucky day.

You wanted to get your steps in. 313 steps to the bottom.

I did sell my '08 to a good buddy of mine and moved on to the Gen3.

I paid $15k for the brand new (1000 miles on it) Gen3 but sold a bunch of stuff to come up with that kind of dough - including my '08.
A bit bittersweet, as I put a lot of miles on my two Gen2s and loved those bikes.

I knew you bought a gen 3 but as your blue gen 2 was in a lot of pictures recently posted, I thought you kept both just to show off...LOL!

Refer to Post 676.
We're still walking down Memory Lane...
To be fair, I thought that was just for that one post and not all the others that followed it.......

It's hard to keep up to all the posts, I'd have to be on this thing all day.....

No, I don't still have this '08 Hayabusa, these last few pics are from the Dry Run Tour back in 2013 for this idea to ride three mountain peaks around the Bay Area in one day. The idea wasn't feasible and I put the idea to rest for 10 years until recently.

Loved my 08 Blue, it was such a perfect bike. Same 2013 ride...

Cue the Time Machine Music again, and let's head back to present day...

That Gen3 was a steal of a price, listed here on the org, and only a few hours from me...you have no idea how close I came to going to get it.
I won't buy a new Gen3 because of their issues...but I'll buy the right used one.
That one checked all the boxes, I just couldn't decide in time.

A year ago, my ride buddy Mark, told me about an all-new twisty mountain ride to the top of Mount Umunhum, I thought, wait, what?! I didn’t know about any twisty mountain road to the south of San Jose in the Southern region of the SF Bay Area. I checked my trusty paper maps, sure enough, no road existed. But I was wrong.

The road to Mt Umunhum opened up to the public in 2017. An all-new twisty ride to the top of a mountain peak at 3489 ft, I had to check it out, and quickly integrated a Dry Run solo ride up to the summit into our 2023 Pashnit Tours tour schedule. A year ago, I did that dry run and worked out an all-new route that was similar to the 2013 dry run ride that Mark & I had done way back 10 years ago. An all-new tour idea was realized and I figured out the mechanics of a route that rode four peaks in the same weekend.

The addition of Mount Umunhum to the Three Sisters tour idea from 2013 (a fourth sister) made it possible to plan out a tour route that visited three of four peaks surrounding the Bay Area solving the issue we had in 2013 when Mark & I set a blistering pace to visit three mountain peaks and three lighthouses all in one day.

The 2023 Dry Run to Mount Umunhum is here:

Indeed, what luck to buy from another h.org member here on the forum. I originally found a bone stock one in San Diego with 100 miles on it (yes really) and was getting ready to leave to go get it - when seller back out at last second and opted to keep it. Then this one was posted up on h.org & was a brand new '22 with 1000 miles & $3k in mods on it for $15k was a bargain. Cost me $1000 to get the bike from Virginia to California but even with the shipping charges, still cheaper to buy this Gen3 from another state than locally in California.
I've bought bikes from Iowa, Minnesota, Washington and Virginia and shipped them to CA. Still cheaper to get them from outside California, even with the $1000 fee to ship it cross-country. Stuff is pricey here.

I thought you had one Gen 1 and one Gen 2 before getting your present Busa. I remember meeting you and seeing your Gen 1 at a bike show either in San Mateo or Sacramento. Your touring business was in its early stages, that was a long time ago.

I did have both my Gen1 & the Gen2 for a really long time, years.
I couldn't let the '00 go even after buying a near-new '08 (3 years old & 900 miles on it when I got it).
After years of sitting in the corner of the garage, just staring at it, I finally sold the '00 to a young fella who drove 300 miles with his mom and paid me in 5 and 10 dollar bills. Giant stack of bills! He had been saving cookie jar money for the longest time and was so excited to buy a '00 blue silver. It had 65k on it when I sold it.

You might be thinking of my second '08 and my TL1000R. I finally sold my TL1000R a few weeks ago. Also had a really hard time letting that go.

I did have a booth at the International Motorcycle Show for several years with the '00 as the centerpiece of the booth. People were always surprised to learn I was touring on a Hayabusa. The shows were super fun, full of energy and I would get mobbed during peak times. But the show fees were expensive, had questionable results and then Covid kinda killed off the motorcycle shows.

That must be the place although I don’t remember your display being so big. I thought I’d read a comment in this thread that you had two Gen 2s. I know what you mean about a good view of the City, if there’s no fog. :D This shot was the last day of a trip to Glacier NP on my way home down the coast. It was mid afternoon in late June!

The kids are ready to ride the all new Twisted Sisters Tour - this will be our inaugural ride of this new tour

DSC06405.jpg

We're meeting in the southern edge of the Bay Area at Marks house. All Mark has to do is wake up and walk out into his garage.

DSC06407.jpg

Mike rode up from Southern California for this, he has several bikes & opted for the Concours on this ride

DSC06408.jpg

Ken turns 80 next year, he's a role model for all of us and is still commuting from Salt Lake City to California for several tours per season. He puts the bike in a Transit Van and drives back and forth from Salt Lake City. He's been riding these tour with me for the last 15 years.
