Quick story about this road: last year, one of our riders hit a calf in one of the long straights in this section of Highway 58. The calf was off the road, but on the wrong side of the fence, and the whole group rode by without even noticing it, then as one of the last riders came by, it jumped out into the middle of the road. The bike hit the calf and the impact broke the bike in half. Crazy. The rider thankfully stayed upright and was unharmed, although rather shook up. The calf had to be put down. And yes, this was the first time, and hopefully last, something like this has ever happened to us on a tour.

In the end, insurance bought the rider a new bike, and we have a crazy story to share every time we talk about this stretch of Highway 58.

There are oil wells everywhere surrounding Taft. I'm always expecting the gas to be cheaper. You're pulling it out of the ground just up the road, it should be cheaper, right?

Within a few miles of the Deer Lodge upon leaving, we lost a couple bikes.

Broken clutch cable on the Speed Triple. Might want to remember this one: I'm always gonna carry a vise grips. And they took apart the lever and attached the perch to the receiver and tied it together to keep the clutch switch activated, so the bike would run. And yes, Tim actually rode it home 300 miles to San Francisco like this.
