2024 Pashnit Touring on a Hayabusa

The road ahead is mountain twisty and Mark led the tour group down to Lee Vining.

I had it in my brain to re-create a shot I took quite a few years ago.

No, not that one, I thought I'd try this one.

One year ago, there was so much snow up here we were standing on 10 feet of snow at the summit. The snow is long gone, but the seasons are changing and the quaking aspen trees found at the 6-8000 ft level are changing full on bright yellow right now.

Groves of them line the edges of Highway 108 which is swoopy wiggling left and right. This pass is a fast hurried race to the 9624 ft summit.
Best part about Highway 108 – Sonora Pass? It’s straight up, straight down, with a 26% grade and numerous tight switchbacks. Fun stuff!

We’ve all ridden Sonora Pass many times over, but no one had been to Donnells Vista at the 6300 ft level, let’s head there. At the vista, you can look straight down at the reservoir 1400 ft below us.

A pause at the summit gives the group a chance to hang out and kick tires for a bit.

Donnell’s Vista, el 6311', provides a bird’s eye view of Donnell Reservoir in the canyon below, fed by the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River and several other creeks. It resembles a miniature Yosemite Valley with steep cliff faces creating the basin for the reservoir.

Built in 1955 at an elevation of 4,893’, the curved arch dam is 291 feet high and 750 feet long. Unfortunately, there is no paved road that heads down to the reservoir.

Dropping several thousand feet in elevation also means a stop just to de-layer as we ride into warmer temps in the Sierra Foothills.

Then it's on to more twisties - This is Big Hill Rd at the 4000' level. This is a backroad around the town of Sonora.

No one had been there.

We haven’t stopped at the Sequoia Forest in Arnold for probably 15 years. Been a long time, even Mark hadn’t been there and he’s been everywhere with me. Sequoias never get old and the groves are very far in-between but we’ve ridden past Calaveras Big Trees many times & never stopped. Finally did. Visitor center is all new and the trees are just as big as always. Always a cool stroll through these massive trees.
