2024 Pashnit Touring on a Hayabusa

Capping it off was Lyons Valley Rd, super fun twisty ride with minimal traffic in the heart of San Diego County.

Home base was 600 miles away. Figured covering that distance would take 12 hours. But, I wanted to ride 600 miles and be home to the wife by 4pm, that meant rising at 3:30am and on the Hayabusa at 4am follow the GPS to negotiate the freeway maze of Southern California to get out of the city before dawn. And before everyone else woke up. Southern California is crazy for traffic congestion and I didn’t want to split lanes for 50 miles.

The goal was Petroglyphs. I knew there were some petroglyphs north of Bishop along the California-Nevada border but I only a general idea where they might be located

But I got distracted by a sign that said Charcoal Kilns. That sounded interesting. Let’s check that out.

3:30 start, sunrise a few hours later with the rising sun

Bombing across the desert making good time - 600 mile day - might be time for a quick break off the bike

I see mountains, reaching the (eastern) Sierra Nevada Range

Stay on task. The goal was Petroglyphs. I knew there were some petroglyphs north of Bishop along the California-Nevada border but I had only a general idea where they might be located. I’d wing it. Nobody really knows why these things are out here, or even how old they are. Estimates on age run 1000 to 10,000 years old. A variance of 9000 years? No one really knows.

What I didn’t know in advance is there are several Petroglyph sites north of Bishop along Highway 395 but most required miles of dirt road riding to reach. However, the Chidago Petroglyph site I thought I was headed for was right off the main highway. But once I reached Chalfant -north of Bishop along Highway 6- I had no idea. No signs anywhere, until I noticed a tiny sign for Petroglyph Rd just north of Chalfant on the GPS. That’s got to be it.

Highway 6 - wide open high desert riding

This has got to be the road to the Petrogylphs - maybe?

Thankfully this dirt was less than a mile. Still not sure if I'm at the right place or just riding off into the desert.

I can see a dry wash down there.

A parking lot - that's a good sign.

If you follow these threads, may recognize that building- rode up the dirt road to the abandoned fire lookout at the top of Leviathan Peak over there awhile back.
