Matt & Dmitry - One of the questions I get about these tours is 'Will i fit in?' After all, you don't know anybody, have never met these people before and it's a little intimidating. But I always retort that when we get new riders like Matt, and veteran riders like Dmitry (15 years of doing these tours with me), as soon as you're on the ride, that's the last of your concerns. We all share of a love of bikes and twisty roads and there is instant camaraderie with everyone.
Dodging cows - few years ago, one of our riders hit a calf that jumped out in the road. She hit the calf, killed it, but impact broke the bike in half. Thankfully not a scratch on her.
Great pics Tim. Those trees (and all old growth trees) are spectacular and have to be seen. Having lived just north of the Avenue of the Giants I always got a kick out of watching ‘first timers’ trying to get their heads around their size and age.
Cattle in the road can be a real hazard especially with young ones. They spook easy. I too hate road construction and it’s everywhere! I came across eleven one lane road stops between Bodega Bay and Rockport north of Ft. Bragg. Still, I’m glad they’re fixing the roads. They’ve been in crappy condition for years. The brand new road surface on the last dozen or so miles of hiway 1 are riding nirvana. Happily I didn’t ride that section during the repaving.
Highway 190 - known as The Western Divide Highway runs along a mountainous spine, weaving back and forth
This region all burned a few years ago in a lightning-caused wildfire. Several sequoia groves along this road and there was a big push to save the sequoias from the wildfire. The base of the trees were all wrapped in an aluminum foil blanket.
