2024 Pashnit Touring on a Hayabusa

Highway 1 along the ocean. With this tour, we spend all day on Highway 1, which never gets old.

Only downside to Highway 1 is the construction. Some years are clear sailing - we've been doing this for 20 years - others not so much.

Stuck waiting for construction - we got 3 miles then stuck again. Well nuts. Every year is different.

My last ride between Bodega aand Leggett was quite a chore despite it being hiway 1. I was stopped ten times by road work.
Ten. That's pretty extreme. Gotta check the CalTrans website to see how many stops. Two right now:

[IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
1-way controlled traffic from 7.2 mi north of Albion /at Lansing St/ to 7.7 mi north of Albion (Mendocino Co) 24 hrs a day 7 days a week thru 3/14/25 - Due to construction - Motorists are subject to delays of up to 10 minutes

1-way controlled traffic at various locations from 2.2 mi south of Westport /at Blues Beach Trailhead/ to 1.5 mi south of Westport (Mendocino Co) 24 hrs a day thru 1800 hrs on 8/27/25 - Due to construction - Motorists are subject to delays of up to 30 minutes

I think only 7-8 were listed before I left but it ended up being ten, some had portable stop lights, some had a flagger and some a flagger/stop light and pilot car. Was pretty bad even getting in front of everyone else. What made it worse I think was getting there when a line of cars/RVs were already there, then having to quietly pass everyone and wait for the Pilot car and the oncoming traffic before getting to go again. One area right on the edge of a cliff had two stops within sight of each other and both had a sitting CHP car? No stops after Rockport or Westport and then the new pavement ride from the ocean to Leggett. Saw only 3 bikes all heading south.

We got a couple of miles....

...and then stopped again on Highway 1 for construction, again . Stop #3. Tim just picked up this sweet little number. Retro & modern in the same package. He's a BMW guy & loves the standards. He's also got a Triumph Speed Triple.

We had passed some slower bikers a few miles back. We were stuck together at the 3rd construction stop on Highway 1.

Then they realized who they got passed by - you're that Pashnit Guy, they said. Dude I been reading your articles for years he said. Fist bumps all around. They were pretty excited. One cool thing about bikers is instant friends not matter where you are or what you ride.

Rob - is in Vietnam right now doing a motorcycle tour with Big Sur Moto Adventures. Looking forward to hearing about his ride through Vietnam.
Gotta give a shout out to these guys, while I'm mostly California-centric, these guys are running around the world.

Time to get out of these stops for construction and have some eats. The ocean is right outside our window.

Tim's BMW R nineT was cool n all, but I'll stick with the Hayabusa. That's generally what happens every time I swap bikes with somebody. Might just be 20 years on a Hayabusa, I'm just so used to this bike. I was happy to give it back. Tim n I have been riding together for a long time, since 2012. He's been coming on these tours for 13 years.

Headed out of Gualala

Highway 1 pulls away from the ocean a wee bit in some spots

Perfect ride day. Not hot. Not cold. Not a cloud in the sky. Just perfect along the ocean. It's 100 degree inland, but along the coast, it's 40 degrees cooler than just 5 miles inland.

More hairpins. Highway 1 has this habit of being wiggle straight for awhile weaving along, then it'll drop down into a canyon and right back out again.

Mark took the lead and I sweep the group. No slow riders with this group. headed into one of the twistiest roads in the state.

We just call it The Leggett Section. Notice no paved road ahead along the ocean.

Highway 1 turns inland and heads over the Coast Range to Leggett

Surprise. Brand new pavement. The motorcycle gods smiled on us.

No lines even painted down yet.
