We have this story about Panamint Valley, of a ride we did through here about 15 years ago. One of the riders was on a Concours and saw this long straight and took off ahead of the group. I was the last guy in the group lollygagging in the back taking pictures of daises and what not. I came over a rise and saw these rocks all over the road in the distance. Rocks everywhere. Well that's odd.
As I got closer to the field of rocks all over the road, I realized that those weren't rocks, they were pieces of motorcycle. For hundreds of yards. As I reached the bike, it was in a ball. A Kawasaki Concours the size of a ball. The bike looked as though it had exploded. No one saw what happened since he was so far out front of the group and likely was doing 100+. We could only surmise the bike went into a death wobble and he lost control, thankfully the rider was completely okay with a slight limp, we learned later he had a broken ankle, very lucky. We figured the bike endo'd at 100+, end over end, and simply disintegrated at high speed. It was crazy he was okay. We gathered up all the pieces of bike, and just made a pile. The bike was nearly unrecognizable as a machine. First person to pull up behind us. Two nurses on their way to Las Vegas to gamble - we're in the middle of the desert - there's nothing out here. Second guy that pulls up is a chase vehicle for a dirt bike off-road tour group. Crazy stuff. The nurses put the rider in their vehicle and drove him back to Ridgecrest at a hospital.
Epilogue of this story, Guy recovers of course, and buys a Hayabusa to replace the Concours. Good times.
We tell that story everytime we come to Panamint Valley.
Yes, there are some very long straights out in the desert.
The road goes nearly dead staight all the way to the base of that range in the distance.
