Anyone had their bike stolen?

I was thinking about getting a security system but I was wondering if they are worth the cost ($400 +/-) and trouble to install. Does anyone know one that works well or is considered top?

A pick up truck and 2-3 able-bodied guys will defeat any alarm system. That is how my old '87 CBR1000 was stolen. If you have Lo-Jack, might have a chance at tracking down the bike and getting it back.
When I leave my bike unatttended in a public place for an extended period of time, I put disc locks (front & rear). And my bike also has Lo-Jack.
P.S. At best, any alarm system is a deterrent...make your bike less attractive to would-be thieves.

I put an alarm on mine last year. They say the most important thing is not to leave the bike sitting uncovered at your hotel and also park it where some thugs cant load it into a van. I dont see how disc locks really help if they lift the bike and load in a truck/van.

I would use every bullet I own to stop a thief, if I saw them.

You are correct and I agree with you 100%. Which is why I said they are DETERRENTS....make the bike a less attractive target vs. another bike with nothing on it.

I had my first 08 busa stolen... I have LoJack on my new one. There is a GPS locater system out now that I might put on my wifes 09. The alarm systems aren't very good for bikes because of how fast they can snatch them. You need to find it fast...

Owned my 954RR for a whole 3 months...gone.

My 08 was stolen in March. I had a Scorpio alarm system that was armed with the perimeter sensor on and they still got it. Insurance company told me that even Lo-Jack can be defeated. All I can say from experience is I will not waste my money with an alarm system. A good lock like the RoadLok will slow a thief down but if they want it its theirs.

I agree 100%

I know how thieves work, I used to be one in my younger years but not anymore.

If a thief wants something bad enough he or she will find a way no matter what kind of alarm system you have but like kromdom said anything for a deterrent will make your bike less attractive for a thief vs a bike without anything.
Another thing, make sure your steering is always locked when parked.

Best you can do is some loud horn/security system and a way to immoblize the bike as in disc locks....this way they have to carry the bike or pick it up. Besides that just be aware where you park your bike, leave it ect....Full insurance is a must if you just go and ride and leave it as you please. The only safe place in is inside your house, or garage. I currently have full coverage on my turbo bike and its kept in a enclosed garage. At my new home I am about to build a garage before to long....it will be linked with my home security system, I have a electronic security gate at my drive, the bike will keep the steering column locked and have disc locks when its sitting in the garage at which I will keep the door down anyway. If they want it then they are going to get it at that point. But with precautions like that its 100X easier to go steal other bikes. Oh and did I mention I have alot of guns and will without a doubt shoot anybody in the leg in my driveway....even a kid. Guess I'm a mean bastard but I wouldn't kill them unless they had a gun

I would tell you that anything and everything that you can put on it is a good thing (including locking the steering column). Make them take more time than they are expecting and you have a chance at keeping it. Had mine stolen last summer in during lunch in broad daylight.

I lock my steering. lock my garage and have a motion sensor light. also a 80lbs Pit Bull . so the light comes on dog goes out and i get my S&W mag 500 50 cal for whats ever left from the dog :thumbsup:

There's not 1 single thing that'll stop a thief, but if you use multiple layers they may move on to an easier target.

This thief pops the steering lock, comes back 30 minutes later and makes off with the bike.

I agree with whoever said the more you try to protect it the better. At home i have disc locks, chain gaurd lock that i installed into my concrete slab, i also have early warning Lo Jack on it too. I have a motion light and a motion alarm. They can be found at harbor freight for about 30 bucks. They call it driveway alert. Put sensor outside and reciever in your room and if someone comes in your yard you know it. My Doberman freaks out when it buzzes so thats what i love the most. Hes got a loud bark. Dont take your bike to the movies or the mall. Its for riding not sitting in a parking lot for someone to just take. Go places where there are bike friends riding with you. A thief doesn't mind one person trying to stop them but if a few of your buds are with you parked together they might think twice about getting caught. Cover your bike if you dont have a garage. Be mindful of who is behind you when going home. Thieves follow things they see and want. Try to be discrete in your neighborhood too. You dont want unwanted attention from neighbors that might know thieves or be one. We all need to watch out for these things. Our rates go up even when no claims are filed because of theft.

Multiple layers and using them is the key. Roadlok, disc lock, Scorpio and Enhanced LoJack. I did a test with the LoJack to see how good it was and almost immediately as I rode it down the street my cell phone got a call, a txt message and the phone was ringing at the house..including an email telling me that my bike had been moved. This last ditch effort won't stop them or prevent damage to the bike but just maybe the low life thieves will get caught.

Also, don't open your garage door for long periods or at the wrong time...:beerchug:

this thread makes it sound like bikes float into the air without 7 locks on them.

i've seen a brand new 600cc cbr at the local Chili's for over 2 months now. It doesn't have any locks on it. Owned by someone who works there and there is no way they can keep their eyes on it. If someone wanted to they could just pull up behind it and toss it in, but no one has, and I live in a bad part of Texas.

The only thing that I make sure of when I have to leave my 'Busa in public is that it's in a well lit area, people can always see it from where ever they are. Not to worried about someone stealing, because I have full coverage and hefty amount of accessory coverage on it.
