Are Motorcycle Tires a Ripoff? The Darkside Car Tire Experiment

Back on Topic . 6 years ago I did major upgrades / repairs to a 2006 FJR1300 that the owner had been running car tires on for the last 40,000 miles commuting . I let him ride my FJR , and he decided to go back to a motorcycle tire . When I removed the car tire it was 18 pounds heavier than the motor cycle new tire , and it was worn out . Shortly after all repairs his transmission gave out . This Marine was a older gentleman who owned since new . He was perplexed on how . I said car tire most likely . Since I did not want the case split job it was taken to the Yamaha dealer . Upon taking the motor out , and finding worn dogs / dog holes / shift forks the big issue is the FJR uses a large coil spring to apply force to the middle drive gears it was worn due the extra load of tire weight / friction . It coast him about 3 k in parts labor to get the bike fixed .

I‘ve heard of that problem when bikes pull trailers. Some dealers won’t install hitches on bikes, even Goldwings and Hawgs for that reason. Warranty problems can arise as well.

I saw you post this elsewhere. Absolute no evidence the ct caused a transmission issue. None, nada, zip, zilch.
ya most Dark side riders never want to admit its the dumbest thing since jumping out of a plane without a parachute :) Wonder why Jeeps with a Dana 35 break with 35" tires , but Dana 44's dont ? Ge must be the the 44 is meant for a larger wheel / tire load than the 35 .
Same applies in all drive trains . Overload it , and failure will occur .
Just because it works does not mean its right ;) Next up Russian roulette is a safe game 5 out of 6 times :)

It's like when you see a mini-van or small SUV hauling a large trailer or boat....it's not a matter if they break but when...

Caution only on my wing :D
