Ontario Woman Sues Over Strip-Search At Ambassador Bridge February 10, 2011 1:01 AM
PrintShare209DETROIT (WWJ) – An angry and embarrassed Ontario woman who says she was strip-searched at the Ambassador Bridge without justification has sued two U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.
The Detroit Free Press says Loretta Van Beek of Stratford filed the suit in Detroit federal court against the unnamed agents. She says she was en route to her Georgia vacation home last March when one agent strip-searched and groped her while the other one watched.
Van Beek says she was detained for two hours, then sent to a windowless cell and ordered to strip because she neglected to disclose she had raspberries in her vehicle.
The lawsuit claims one agent aggressively groped her breasts and genital area while the other watched. Van Beek says she was then photographed and fingerprinted and sent back to Canada.
Attorney S. Thomas Wienner of Rochester tells the Free Press the experience traumatized Van Beek and “She’s concerned she might not be the only victim.â€￾
Customs and Border Patrol says it cannot comment on pending litigation.

Is she hot? Just saying, it may not be true, but then again it may. And what is "aggressive" defined as, really. Maybe they weren't being aggressive, and she's just too sensitive

Well if she wouldnt have broken the law in the first place this wouldnt be an issue, Would it.

He said She said, No one will ever know for sure.

Because she most likely forgot to declare the raspberries she was carrying in her vehicle? Come on, now. - Raspberries.

This sort of thing really turns people off visiting America and, frankly, your economy needs all the tourist dollars it can get at the moment.

I would love to come over and see some of you guys but what with all the TSA/Homeland Security nonsense, I just wouldn't put myself through the hassle.

She hired an attorney named Wienner? .... In a gropeing law suit? He must be really good, really cheap or she has no sence of irony.

I agree its pretty trivial, But Im just getting sick and tired of people sueing for something they initiated in the first place.

 add to the fact that the poster commenting on this is notright. Priceless

I agree, who knows what really happened. A pissed off person tends to exagerate, and I'm sure she was pissed off being detained for raspberries.

Doesn't come as a shocker though, I also get "special treatment" from the TSA just trying to fly with camera equipment for scuba diving. Coming back from Bali I think we had to go through 3 different tsa lines and have our bags searched. It's amazing seeing the difference between other countries and their security measures and our rediculous security measures.

If she brought a bag of weed, that would be initiating a search, but raspberries? She didn't bring this on herself, this was blown out of proportion. Granted, we can always speculate on WHY this was blown out of proportion. Maybe she was being horribly rude when they asked her if she was travelling with any parishable goods and decided to be horribly rude back. :dunno:

I agree on the sueing part.

i don't know the particulars of the case but i do know that Customs is very diligent toward any type of fruit/seed items coming across the border due to insects and/or disease...plus, if she was being held and searched, there is usually video running for the agents protection and in case anything is found...i wonder if she's thought about being a film star?

This. I know if someone makes work suck for me, I have this funny tendency NOT to go out of my way for them. Just saying, it's been known to happen

Remember the Monty Python skit.(soldiers being trained to defend themselves against various forms of fruit).

Maybe the border guards were afraid of being attacked with said contraband.(the raspberries).

...vacation home in Georgia? She probably felt like she was treated like common folk.

If these were both men...they were in the wrong. A woman should have been groping...I mean searching her.

I got hassled once returning to my own country. The plane had to have had a couple hundred people on board. It was like 5 in the morning and customs guards were letting everyone thru with no hassle...till they got to me.I was the only traveller singled out. Why?

Best guess...Because of the way I look. 6 foot + dude with shaved head and arms full of what appear to be jailhouse tattoo's.

I was a little bothered, but wtf, they are trained to look at people, and people prejudge. So,I kept my cool, answered politely and was on my way in 3 minutes with just a qwik search of my bag.

Since then when I travel...ball cap to hide shaved head,no 9 earings in,long sleeve shirt to hide the tat's,pants to hide tat on leg. Now I get processed qwikly along with all the other law abiding sheep.

Easiest country to get thru customs that I have found...Mexico.

You walk up to this traffic light they have, you press the button,if the light goes green you walk right thru (suitcase full of dope, major explosives, raspberries you name it) if the light turns red,the Mexicans fondle you and yer luggage. Actually...I've never seen them search anyones person, just their bag.

I agree on the sueing part.

Once again I do agree it was probably blown out of porportion.

But yes she did initiate it when she didnt declare the Raspberries.

Didnt declare the Raspberies, its the law. You are probably right about the Rude thing, It would be my guess she didnt think it was that big of deal and argued which probably just didnt go over well with customs. Which led to her being pulled to the side.

Sueing..... Whats next, Sue McDonalds for there coffee being to HOT, Ohhhh wait, some moron already did that too.

Every time I've crossed the border I always get ask if I have any fruits or vegies. Insects and disease from another country is a real threat and taken very seriously.

If this gal had a home in Georgia then it wasn't her first time across the border and she understood the rules. She also knew she had rasberries and most likely lied to the border agent because she didn't want the hassle or didn't want to eat the berries on the spot.

I have no mercy for her what so ever. When you play games with folks in authority sometimes you pay a price. She got strip searched and I'd bet you a hundred bucks she will seriously think about behaving herself in the future!

Compliments to border agents doing what they are paid to do! :beerchug:
