Over here in the UK, we can't register and tax a new bike without insurance, which you can't get without a license.
Registration is a one off for the life of the vehicle. Approx 60 GBP
Tax is an annual road fund licence. Currently 63 GBP.
Insurance must cover third party liability at the least. Mine was 769 GBP this year, fully comprehensive, but it drops with a "no claims bonus" annually.
Getting a license (endorsment to you yanks) in the UK is a pain in the ass! We aren't allowed on public roads untill we've passed a Compulsary Bike Test, which is current for 2 years. Then we have to take a theory and hazard perception test. We are limited to 125cc bikes until we pass a test. There are 2 categories of test....
A1. Taken on a 125cc machine. After passing, you are limited to a power output of 33BHP for 2 years, then unlimited. A1 becomes just A.
A. Taken on a machine of 45 BHP or more. This is called Direct Access and you have to be 21 years or more. After passing the world is your oyster!
A or A1 is the endorsment on your license.
My wife has just passed her CBT and is learning what it's all about on a 125cc bike. When she's ready, her instructor will bump her up onto a 500cc for her direct access training.
It cost's a small fortune to get on 2 wheels over here. I was lucky and did my test 20 years ago when it was a lot easier. I did one off road test and then my proper test. It was just a guy on foot who watched me ride round a housing estate for 20 minutes. As long as you got through in one piece you passed back then! LOL. Now we have a persute style test, with the examiner on a bike, or in a car, behind you giving instruction through a radio headset!
What's the procedure like on the other side of the pond?
