Blow by

My bike smells like blow by especially when it first starts up, but also at traffic lights while idling. I changed the oil after I noticed it and it made no difference. It is not overfilled with oil and I see no visible smoke. I looked under the tank but, I could not see any crankcase breathers of PCI valves or stuff like that. The air filter was perfectly clean. The bike only has 1350 miles on it, but, most of them were at the drag strip (actually only about 32 miles were on the strip). So, is there any place to look at that might explain the odor of blow by? It started all of a sudden so I thought that some hose might have popped off or something. It is running perfectly and trapping higher and higher speeds although its gas mileage sucks, but, if you are just running 45 miles to the strip and back and making 5-15 passes on the bike, I expect gas mileage might suffer.

...are you sure its not some wire burning

If your engine is running good, then I dont think it has to do anything with that!

Not a wire burning. Smells like blow by but it could be a real rich condition, I suppose. I ran it to Bakersfield and back to race Fri night at Famoso Raceway and it got a little over 40 mpg on the highway round trip (about 230 miles) with a 41T rear sprocket and it ran great although I sucked at the track. But after 115 miles of hard running on the highway it still smelled of blowby. I have decided to just run the sucker and not worry since it does not use oil and it is running stronger than I can ride.
Sorrry for the poor quality of the evidence of why I suck but the video was not good in the dark.

what is blowby?
Blowby may be an old term. It is the smell that used to come out of the breather pipe on engines prior to positive crankcase ventilation. The usual cause is that oil is getting past the oil control ring(s) into the crankcase. Back in the day, the entire rear of cars behind the engine came to be covered by oil as the engine aged since there was a breather pipe that vented down from the engines and spewed whatever you would call the gasses and oils that develop in the crankcase of an engine all back under the car.
The smell of this mixture is different from the smell of a rich running engine since it contains oil in it too.
Yes, this was prior to tailpipe sniffers and a/f readers. We just used to sniff the exhaust pipes and taste the exhaust gasses with our tongues. At night, someone used to have to hold the candle so we could see.
Ah, but I digress. Maybe I will take the JCheese tune out of the PowerCommander and try PC's tune for the Yosh slip ons to see if it makes any difference, although the current tune is very smooth and nice. I could also go back to the stock factory tune. This would tell me if it is a rich condition that I am noticing.
I was just basically wondering if there were any hoses that vent from the crankcase that might have blown off the bike. I have the Suzuki shop maunal for the '05 but the CA emissions stuff is enough to give me a headache. Canisters and pumps and tons of hoses?

I'm still a little lost....

do you mean it smells like burning oil and stuff?

It is not using oil, but, the exhaust smells a little like it has burnt oil in it. I can not describe it in any other terms but blow by. But, since it is not visibly using any Mobil1 10-40, expensive bike oil, I am going to ignore it for awhile and see what happens. The bike only has 1500 miles on it. If my Mustang had this odor, I'd be checking the PCV valve and replacing it in a heart beat. When the PCV gets stuck or fails, that is exactly the same odor as what my Busa is smelling like. But, although the Busa has smog stuff, I am too lazy to pull all the body work and really look the bike over carefully to see if there is something wrong. I will do that this winter when I can't ride the bike anyway.

Blow by is caused by oil literally blowing by the piston rings, and into the combustion chamber. That's why you can see/smell/taste it.

Yeah, 1500 miles, with about 150 passes at the dragstrip! The first, being with like 175 miles in the clock.

Take that doggy out and stretch it's legs... perhaps that will clean it out!

Or, maybe it would help if it ever saw wide open throttle. It's all loaded up from short shifting and your lugging it around.

Blow by is a good thing, right. That's what happens everytime some squid on a Kawasaki try's to stay with my Busa.
I Blow by his ASSS.

Blow by ... thats what all other bikes experience when the busa blows by them

Heard this before somewhere....

I guess with all all those performance mods you have, a 12 dosn't have a chance. Wonder if I should do the kickstand mod and get clear lenses too? Maybe I should just squirt some metal-flake paint on there and chrome everything else.

I know you gotta be making like 40 hp more than me to push that XL helmet throught the air at speed.

I was gonna challenge a race, but I now see that you also run a tinted screen and Busa grips...

Clearly an unfair advantage.

Mods, what mods. A pair of low cost pipes and a over priced Power Commander that picks up FM if I ride on a wet road. That should be a handicap. Besides, I weigh too much. And I think I have the Busa's weight limit maxxed. And I am soo tall I can't even tuck in. But what is one to do. We work with what we have.

Lighten up guy's.

I agree 100%

I'm just playing, but it came off a bit rough... Probably from taking so many punches down in the smack shack. Seems like I'm always on DEFCON 5 right when I log in over here.

Don't worry, someone will come in here and go full ballistic on me here in a minute for smarting off on "their" Busa board.

Pretty funny Power Commander comment... seems my buddy Tetge's didn't do much for him either, other than smooth his rough idle and abrupt throttle response. Maybe it would be still worth the money if you guys still got Howard Stern down there...

Not a problem. I will give you more shiyt than a Busa owner. But I also respect the 12. I have a few friends who have them from the last few year models. And they run very strong. As some have said, it is all about the type of riding you do or more important the rider. So far I have managed to just beat all 12's I have come across. Some by a good distance, others by just a few feet. One made my Asss pucker cause he was almost even with me up to some ridiculous speed. So relax, you guys have a great bike. There is not enough difference between them to ever relax around them.

No doubt. I wish there were more Busa's AND 12's around here to play with. Tetge and I both slayed the previously "Top Gun" R1 in one of our very first outings at the track, so now we only have each other to slice and dice with.

The few other bikes that show at the local track are all highly modified and out of our league.
