Folks.. I am looking to make a trip to Brazil. Friends and I are gonna try to hit Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro. I have been to some travel sites but would like to see if anyone has firsthand knowledge or experience on this topic.

I've been to Brazil, not to party though. I loved the country, and so many of the women are extremely beautiful, not fat like most of the ones here. I personally can't wait to go back. It's a vast country like the US, the climate is great too.

**edit** I can't forget to mention, the meat in the Brazillian restaurants in Brazil are some of the best food you'll eat anywhere. I think it was about $8.00 a meal and we always left stuffed.

Be sure to see Mount Corcovado with it's huge statue of Christ the Redeemer ('Cristo Redentor').

Sugarloaf Mountain is awsome...and then there are the beaches!!!

In Rio always travel with a group, or at least a buddy, and try to stay in well populated areas. I was in Brazil for 5 weeks for school and me and a buddy used to sit on the balconies of our hotel and watch people get mugged by these hug groups of small kids. They would mob you and leave you with nothing except your underwear. I was pretty shocked the first time I seen it.

anywhere would be nice to travel. i believe everyone should travel to the other side of the world to see something new. i have been to germany, ireland, hungry, and the **** hole called iraq and i guess you can include the root of all evil kuwait. for ones that never travel outside the continental U.S. you really should sometime.

Hey my name is Devin and I am new here but let me help you out a little brother,

To begin with, let me tell you first hand, Rio is great Copa cabana is realy nice and you might try the meridian hotel on the strip depending on how long your gonna stay you might want to rent an apartment, it would be cheaper. My wife is from rio and I have been there its great.
Things to plan on;

Passport, Visa for your travel it is easier and cheaper to go to the brazilian consulate here in the u.s. and get your visa cost is about $100 and you will get in back in about 5 days as oppossed to using a travel agent and paying $200 and up for the same time frame.

Once you get this you will need a hotel reservation in hand once you arrive in country or you will not be allowed to enter.

Once your there, travel in small groups and try to blend in ie; your clothing should be about the same as the locals try not to stand out and be that ugly, arrogant american flanting money or you will get mugged.

Stay away from the central market area its is not safe for outsiders and please Stay out of the Favella's

They are the same as the projects here in the big city, if not from there don't go there!

I am new to the site but this is one topic I am very fluent in as my extended family lives there still. If you need any help advice or guidance hit me up I will be glad to help.

If I couldn't live in the US, I'd live Brasil. I've been there three times.

Corcovado (Christ)
Pao du Acucar (sugar loaf (poor spelling))
Ipanema (beach)
Leblon (beach)
Copacabana (beach)

Look out for the shoe shiners; and the prostitutes (escorts) who look a lot like women.

...a LOT like women...

mostly...

All this talk of muggings reminds me, when I was in Brazillia, a punk kid tried to steal the cell phone off a friend of mine. A bystander (old man) grabbed the kid by the arm and he dropped the phone. Speaking of phones, my Nextel worked down there. Imagine that, it frequently gives me trouble in Florida, but worked fine in Brazillia.

Excellent post and welcome to the community.
I'll be asking you a bunch of questions. I did try some sites online and have done a bit of research. There is an outfit called AnythingInRio that claims to put together custom vacations with a guide that will take you to all of the non-tourist places and can arrange accomodations. However they haven't replied to my email so I need to start gathering more info to make my own arrangements. I did specifically ask them to rent an apartment rather than a Hotel so that is one thing you and I are eye to eye on.
On another note, I have been reaching out to some young ladies on myspace to see if I get any bites.
Also can you recommend a particular airline? I saw that United flies from Dulles airport directly to Rio but would like more options.
