I had the same thing happen a couple years ago. I had done some work on my bike and overlooked plugging the fan in. Check there first. Just my 2 cents.

swap out your thermostat ($25)and burp your system. did you recently change out the anti freeze? as others said, you can ride it but watch that guage and make sure there is a decent amount of coolant in there.
