I communicated with this guy years ago when I wanted to buy a light trailer. Something didn't feel right, and I went with Harbor Freight instead.
It is silly to avoid credit cards in this age, especially online. Just be vigilant. Credit cards have a lot of protection built in, not to mention convenience.
When you are too nice - you pay the price (sometimes, unfortunately).
Most ebay sellers are decent folks, and it actually has gotten better over the years.
Contact ebay, not PayPal, explain the situation and see what they suggest. Follow the link somewhere on the site, they will provide a number to call with a one time pass code.
Most large items are drop shipped. I.e. the seller doesn't carry it in stock, but simply forwards your order to the manufacturer, who then ships it to you. On occasion, such logistical arrangement doesn't work perfectly, and in such case the seller has to take initiative and straighten things up - which doesn't seem like he did.
Working that many hours a day is just crazy! Hope it's worth it.
