Camshaft Bearings, Anyone Replaced Them?

Hey Kiwi, there was no identifying marks on camshaft and sprocket? No dimples or lines or keyway?
Anyway,sure you got that covered.
I was just wondering if you stopped...you know...taking the meds...

love ya bro,
Rubb.

I wondered where the heck you been?
Are you doing all the repair work yourself?
And cheating on the oRg like that. . . Ya should be ashamed of yerself lol.
In the garage getting my knuckles busted fighting 20 year old bolt and nuts.
Yes, head gasket set, water pump, timing belt, pulleys, tensioner, thermostat, brake rotors/pads, cv axles, tie rods, ball joints, shocks, window tint, added external transmission cooler, trans filter and oil, differential fluid, transfer case fluid, new radiator, alternator and list goes on. Im no expert, but enjoy wrenching and got her as a fun project, so it’s kept me entertained. I still need to drop the transmission to replace the rear main seal.
I know! Don’t ban me, please. Lol

Wow..... for a guy whose “no expert” you sure know your way around servicing and repairs lol.
You obviously got that vehicle cheap, you’re spending a ton of $$ right there.
Body looks in pretty good shape, just mechanically neglected huh?
I haven’t worked on cars for 2 years now, just bikes, and I can tell ya I sure don’t miss the car work.

Kiwi, it cost me $0.01. Lol! In laws didn’t want to deal with it after headgasket let go. It already needed all this work when they got it and this pushed them over the edge and they wanted nothing to do with it. I love these old Japanese suvs and felt bad letting it go to the crusher.

I had a good chuckle over your post Miguel, yep, I'm so efficient I even answered all my own questions lmao! AND did all the work required.
FIGJAM.
Kiwi
HII Kiwi Rider. WOW someone who does not want more power! Yes I had mine replaced with ceramic bearings and adjustable sprockets. I had it done. I also bought custom ground Webb cams, + 1mm intake valves,+1mm inconal exhaust valves, bronze seats and guides, HD cam bolts and a ported head..

@michael parris heuberger

here´s a second one ;) &

more power i only woul need if i go for 1/4 mile race or so or you wanna "blast" away a ferrari, lambo or bugatti etc. away on a not-speed-limited highway like some of ours here in germany.

at country roads even the 129 hp of my carbed fj 1200 have been enough to keep behind two busa (´02 & ´08) with damn good racers on.
even they tried to get all that day long me outa their mirrors - ha ha ha - no chance
and my speedo that day showed more than one time lots more than 200 km p h - on the c.r.!

for beeing really fast / quick pn the c.r. you need an agile chassis / bike like at my fj1200 AND my ´00 busa
with sb-bar, nose 15-20 mm down and ass 20-30 mm up.

with this kinda agile chassis i´ll show you where, as we say here, "the frog wears his hair".

so ....... - big grin

If the day came that I if I wanted to leave an FJ1200 in the dust, I'd give up my Hayabusa and turn it into a flower pot for the wife...I've ridden a pretty well set up FJ1200 and it wouldn't even hold a candle to my Hayabusa on a bad day.

You are either a spectacular rider or have sorely over estimated the abilities of the guys on those Hayabusas

bee?

comparing my fj with my ´00 busa on the nearby race track
and on the goog known roads around here
i for sure can say
that both reach the same speed in corners.

that´s a fact.

at highways no chance to follow the busa with a fj - sure the busa has 50 horses more with a lower cw-value. ;)

bit i only compare them at country roads or on the r.t.
and then .... ;)

Even on a country road (at least the ones I ride) an FJ1200 would be so outclassed it wouldn't even be a contest. even though your FJ1200 is a good looking bike.

My gen 1 Bandit is comparable to an FJ and my Hayabusa would eat it for breakfast anywhere, anytime and it was a stage 2 bike with full front and back Progressive suspension and Bike Master superbike bars so it could handle as well.

...don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the FJ1100/1200 as I think Yamaha was really onto something when they made them...even the first gen FZR 750 was a stellar bike.

I don't know what they were thinking with the gen 1 FZR600 and that underpowered motor they used but the platform was great.

(...)

bee?

go to a region with short straights and tight curves as like as we had that day.
then you will wonder and realize why the two busa (´02 & ´08) couldn't drive away from me with my fj1200.
and yes it was a hard kind of work to stay withem but all the day long they had no chance to disappear what ever they even tried.
believe in me - these two busa´s had two very fast riders . ;)

and yes again - i had one of my best days that day - the rear tire was used from one edge to the other. ;)

It’s not that I don’t want more power... I just wanna get the chassis fully optimised...... then when it’s sorted I’ll work on getting a few more ponies from the donk.
Anyways, I love it the way it is, for the roads I ride here in NZ.

Your bike deserves the extra attention and like you said, handling is key when out riding...you can only go so fast without losing your license anyway.

I'd imagine you will be playing with the enduro more and more out in the back country...no laws (or few) out there...

The way I look at it, the Busa motor in stock form has more than enough power for the way I ride and the policed roads I ride. Power upgrades are expensive and really only justifiable if racing... and I ride for fun on country roads.
Yes I am getting out more and more on my DRZ400E, I’m in the process of setting it up for adventure riding and long distance stuff.
My safari fuel tank has a 500km range and I’m getting my seat modified for more comfort, it needs it!
Stock seat I can only go about 40km and have to stop to rest my a$$ lol.
I was just down at the river the other evening after work, there’s a network of trails and gravel roads and it’s a lot of fun...

There's something to be said about going just about anywhere..seeing a side trail and just going down it without worry...

When I was riding off road, it was quite a bit of fun exploring different trails..

Hi.Kiwi Rider. I just leave anything a lone. When I take mine on the street I will just turn it down to 400HP.

Stock Sucks
!

grin, big grin

"power is nothing without control"

that sentence a tire manufacturer used some years ago in his advertising. ;)

leaning to that sentence i say that
the tighter curves are the more you need control
means chassis agility + best controllability / dosable at the brakes,
and the less you need a huge amount of hp.

so i personally watch at the very first what i could change at the chassis to get it better than the busa´s stock chassis layout.
(i definitely prefer country roads and when ever possible i avoid any high-speed orgies on the german autobahn with its free / unlimited speeds)

following these my experiances of thousands and thousands of miles , if i was @Kiwi Rider at that beautyful country roads in NZ,
i ;) would read all these hints & recommendations ;) to the theme "chassis" and its agility.
better and easier you can´t get that fast around corners
what are the very best connections between two straights.

there we (here) say that then "the wheat is separated from the chaff" .

 did i already say that i loooooove corners? - biggest grin as possible.

Well, I took my cams to work and pressed the cam drive gear and bearing off the cam using our press.
All worked out ok, one thing though, if anyone plans on doing this job themselves DO NOT FORGET to mark the position of the sprocket in relation to the camshaft position BEFORE pressing them off.
Will keep y’all posted on my progress.
Kiwi

I just ordered a set of "Super stock" cams from Brock's Performance. I'll be installing a set of ceramic bearings on them before I install the cams.

Question: Did you have to apply heat to facilitate getting the sprocket and/or the bearing off the cam? If not, do you think it's worthwhile to do so and would it be helpful, or should I not do that??

I'm a noob and this will be a first for me. I have access to a press at work that I can use. Past that, any other tools that might be helpful?
