cold tires

Most people who use soft compound race type tires on the street will never be able to build enough heat in the tire to get the performance the tire is capable of, and are wasting their $$$.

I have heard that a few times... so what about these $$$ 2ct tires? They have a softer compound off center and are supposed to work better... more crap? (for the street that is)
 
don't forget tire pressue which affects plyability.... that's not the word... I forget the word for when a tire bends/twists/contorts during normal riding and heats up?  someone?  anyway, lower pressure helps heat up better during cold days

You ask a hard question . I always wait for about 5 miles of riding to feel that my tires are ready for anything real, and thats at a good speed .

Two coumpond tire for the street or two coumpound for the track?

The first tire would work well on a cold street ride, the second tire not so well.

But then, I use single compound Metzler z6 roadtec sport touring tires

that have excellent stick on a cold rainy day, so what do I know about two compound tires....

I think the dual compound tires designed for the street have merit. The tires are built to perform with the heat cycles street tires experience. Race tires, on the other hand, are built to perform by bringing the tire up to temperature and keeping it there. After so many cycles these tires are junk even if they have tread left. Those who buy race take offs to run on the street often have less traction or stick because the compound has lost it's properties because of heat cycles.

I'm curious to see how many know when their tires have reached performance temp and at what temperature range the tire reaches it's best performance. And, if anyone knows how hot is too hot. These things that every rider should know when choosing tires. I have found few who can answer that question "What temperature range does YOUR tire perform at it's best"?
Most race tires will perform best in the 210-230 deg. range.
 
For psi, go with what the tire manufacturer recommends, not necessarily the 42/42 psi stated by Suzuki. I adjust my tire pressure before almost every ride depending on the type of riding (aggressive, even paced, two- up, etc.) usually between 36-40. Too low of a psi will cause your tire to overheat and lose its ability to withstand the pressures you are applying to it - ultimately weaking the tire. In extreme cases, more so for cars, they can blow out due to overheating. Also, use an accurate guage and occassionally ask your local auto mechanic to test it for accuracy compared to their tire guage.

In regards to warming tires up I just know when to feel comfortable about them being warmed up. Just a sixth sense of sort. Also, I sway back and forth aggressively a good bit in 2nd gear to help warm more of the tire up faster and take turns faster and faster until I know I'm good - usually about 5 miles.

I scrubbed in my friend's 08' last Sat. night on the way home from the dealer when it was in the 50s, never had an issue. Good Luck!
