The Corps announced Thursday that more than 1,000 leathernecks have been selected for promotion to major or lieutenant colonel.

Of the 1,427 captains considered for promotion, 670 were selected by the fiscal 2008 major selection board, a 47 percent selection rate — down slightly from fiscal 2007’s 48 percent. Twenty Marines were selected from above the zone; the rest were in zone, according to stats released by the Corps’ officer promotions branch.

Of the 1,451 majors considered for promotion, the fiscal 2008 lieutenant colonel selection board selected 26 Marines from above the zone and 338 in zone, for a total of 364 — a 25 percent selection rate, the same as last year.

The aviation and infantry occupational fields had the highest number of officers eligible for promotion by each board. Aviation and infantry were well represented in the final count, with 221 aviation officers and 80 infantry leaders selected for promotion to major. The lieutenant colonel board selected 110 aviation Marines and 66 infantrymen for promotion.
