Cowl installation

Yes.

I bought it brand new in Corpus Christy, TX during a road trip while I was still on the waiting list in Austin, TX.

I almost went passed by the dealership but was sure glad that I changed my mind and went in.

I was wondering how I’d get it home when the service manager was kind enough to offer to load it onto his pickup and deliver it for free as he was visiting his girlfriend in Austin a couple of weeks later.

I haven’t modified it too much since I bought it:

- zero gravity double bubble (smoke)
- frame crash protectors
- throttle rocker
- wider pegs
- NWS rear hugger
- Bridgestone Battlax S20 EVO’s

I also cut the license plate tail to the bottom of the license plate for looks.

I recall that I fiddled with a lot of different H4 bulbs back them and after too many burned out I went back to stock and now find the lights quite yellow compared to the whitish color of the Busa’s LEDs.

Upcoming work and parts on hand:

- radiator flush and oil/filter change
- replace F/R brake pads (EBC EPFA)
- upgrade brake lines to Spiegler USA
- check fuel filter
- ultrasonic clean injectors

Hoping to get to a few track days in 2022.

Oh man, memory lane, that thing still looks great, and is my all time favorite motorcycle!
In 2001 one of those passed me on an awesome wheelie, in my lane, lol.
I was on a 94 zx7, and tried to run him down to see the bike...tried...not a chance, he disapeared as I dropped 3 gears going nowhere.
I thought it was an R1, but my buddy behind me saw it and let me know.
The next year, I bought a new 02 gsxr1000, blue/white, as the black was sadly a one year only color.
Talk about a game changing machine!
I still miss that one.
Thanks for taking the time to post that, it made my day!

What "latches" ???...There are four pushpins under the front edges, four pushpins for the center section that joins the sides behind the seat, four Allen head screws, four allen heads that hold the grab rail, two Phillips head screws, four slotted sections in the rear of the tail, two rubber press-in pins on the very front of the tail section, and two catches under the rear on the tail light.

What latches ?.
I think he is referring to the 2 catches in the rear section, I did the same thing, and broke both tabs. They seem way to delicate. I was able to secure tail section without them, but it still bugs me that they are broke.

I was following the youtube guy removing the whole piece and there were 2 latches near the tail light cover ed by rubber pads. Should have not done so - don't even need to replace those spacers.. Anyway, I don't think they make any difference other than some vibration at high speed.

Good observation. Those tabs are simply there to keep the tail from lifting, or chattering on that rear tail light lens. Nothing more. Your four allen head grab rail bolts typically hold the tail down, but you might notice a little bit of vibration or chatter. Kind of like the wind screen when it vibrates.

Can you not alter the pillion seat cowl ( have it ground out, carved, shaved ) where the existing grab handle is now? Then you could merely change to the cowl or the pillion seat cushion? What am I missing - is the hardware different?

My only thought there was moving it around in a garage, having the handle would make it a little easier I suspect, and aerodynamics will not come into play for me as I suspect many never run there Busa at warp factor 9 most of the time. I'm not so worried about theft since if they want it , I don't think a missing handle is going to prevent them... I know with my K1600 I always used said rear handle to set it on the center stand and to move the bike, not having that option for me may be a deciding factor on the dome or not - it will put my back in an awkward position to try and balance and move the bike - could be wrong and wont honestly know until I jockey it around...

Both other gens had a mod to cut out the hump to accommodate the grab bar...perhaps it's time this one has the mod as well...

Was the gen2 frame missing the mounting points for the center stand?
Or were they there, just blocked by the belly wing?
I know the gen2 frame had 2 more holes in it, one per side, for fairing mounts.
I don't know of any other frame differences between gen 1 and 2.
I ask because the gen3 frame is supposedly the same as the the first 2, and was curious if anyone has looked for center stand mounts on it.

Great idea I still don’t have cowl .will call dealer again, but I did get
sky lift now to put it together.

Kim, you and I have the same problem except I got one Busa up against the garage door, I've got my wife's car on the other half, and I've got my 2022 in about 1000 pieces.:p

PS Kim, My Brother "EASY" has one of those, and I swear to Gawd, his damn bike catches more air than anybody I know. That darn lift is addictive. He's doing LED work on every Northern Cal SacTown Hayabusa in the area.

From what I understand most the owners get a little nervous when he starts lifting those suckers off the ground.

Hey Kim, question. Are your front reflectors round, or square?.

Dunno if this fits in this thread, but, Spud, I noticed you have the same pitbull stand I have..

It worked great on some of my other bikes, but, on the busa, the leverage isnt really good, soo, besides the balancing act, and the amount of force needed to raise the stand, I wanted to see if there was a easier way..

The woodcraft stand is height adjustable, which gives the user a better fulcrum angle on the initial lift..much easier, and, for most uses, dont need the wheel 5 inches high..1/2 inch is good..lol
