Ducati's..would you own one?

Might be fun, just to have something different. But, only if it were a second bike.

I don't think i'd want the hassle of one like everyone's been saying, i like the jap bikes plenty.

i don't like Ducati much , a friend of mine got a 2008 1098 , he is not happy about the handling and vibration .

As long as the engine is in good condition (crankshaft, rockers, camshafts and belts came to mind), you shouldn't have any problems with it. Carb sync is no big issue. Besides, air-cooled 2 valvers are relatively easy to work on. In my former Ducati group, only highly tuned SS's (big bore / high compression pistons, aggresive crankshafts, large diameter valve airflowed heads, big-bore Dell'Ortos) used to have mechanical problems. Judging by the ad, the bike should be in good condition, but such a low price is a bit suspicious.

I used to have a 748 SP, first series ('98, see below). It was supposed to be a nightmare, but I had a very reputable mechanic to take care of her and never had a problem (other than some leaks from the oil return and some flakes from the cams). Even if I loved the chassis composure, power delivery and deep engine tone, I never got used to the mechanical clatter of the desmo and the dry clutch. And I REALLY got pissed off by most of the Ducati fellow riders, mostly jap-bashing posers. When I discovered that the owner of my workshop had an R1, and considered Duc owners basically rich people wanting to show their wealth, and an awesome bussiness for him, I sold it and got a Gixxer. But that's another story...

ImageShack Links Do Not Work

Thanks to all for the feedback and great posts. I see it is a mixed bag here. Some do and some don't.

Thanks again.

A friend of mine has a nice one. Yes, it's a money pit. I don't ride with him much anymore because it is always suffering some issue. I love the look but don't want one anymore
just throwing this in.... same buddy also bought an MV Agusta F4 recently. yep, yet another Italian money-pit, break down beast. I love the looks, but I'll take RIDING over fixing any day of the week

Isn't that replica like 60 grand?
More like $72,500 and they were already sold out before production began. I think there are only 100+ made worldwide.

I can't imagine these not being a constant money pit. The reason for this post is that I located a 1993 900SS not to far from me. Price is affordable, bike is in good condition with low miles and clean title.

I always enjoy the feedback here and do take it seriously so I thank you in advance.

Ducati=money pit?

I wouldn't own one...not my style of bike. I'm into longer rides...not a big canyon carver. I value pure acceleration and comfort over handling and racetrack prowess. I have heard they're pretty high maintainence, but if your into the twisties it might be a nice purchase...it'll def be diff than all the other japanese liter bikes running around out there...albeit slower

as long as they are serviced regularly they are pretty reliable, not japenese like but not money pits by any means

if your mechanically inclined and can do your own valve adjustments they arent bad at all

for the record I put about 20 k on a 2000 996 including racing and track days

my father has and does own several ducati's including a 900ss and 900fe he has had to replace a couple of rocker arms because of flaking , changed the clutch m/c and he did have problems with rust in the tank of one of the 900's. but when you consider how many miles and how hard he rides his bikes I dont think its bad.

ducati's are diff though I personally love them but the experience of riding one is much diff then riding a busa for sure

If I could "let it be" for the money it might be fun.

My problem? I'm to much of a perfectionist therefore more than I care to spend.

If your a perfectionist
face7.gif
(I am one also- Me, it must always look like it just came off the show room floor) then your going to be spending $$$$ on that 900 from what I see
SHOCKED.gif
. My suggestion to Ya
idea3.gif
, look for another bike like a SUZ TL1000R
ThumbsUp.gif
. I had one and I'll have to say, I'am sorry I let it go
