Fixing oil suckage in 2003 (project for a friend)

Everyone needs to understand I have a lot of costs to attempt to recoup here. IMHO selling the bike in the smallest pieces gives me the best shot at getting back to zero from -$7000 to -$7500. The original head is not the problem. It's in the rod/piston/bearing from #1 or the crank. I hate to sell the whole engine since the lower end is defective in some whay but the head is not.

Thanks to everyone that gave advice and support.:beerchug:

...and the head is off....
need advice because there is stuff going on here I have not seen.

valves look ugly

piston #1 (note the metal shavings)

piston#4 (more metal shavings)

headless engine...

Question 1: are those valves done for or can they be cleaned and rehabilitated?

Question 2: never seen metal shavings in that loaction - any guesses where they are from and what to do about them?

Sorry i've missed this thread. You can see in the top pic above that the #1 piston has hit the head(look at the flat spot in the chamber at the top and bottom. You can tell there has been contact). You've at least got a rod/bearing/crank journal issue. Prolly does not help you much now though...
May not be a real expensive fix. Depends on how the crank looks.

finished disassembly of the body & frame today - it looks a lot smaller in pieces.

tearing into the bottom of the engine this week so I'll get a real answer,

Matt says connecting rod on #1 has 1/4" play around crank. Problem location found. Bittersweet. Fortunately, Hayabusa parts sell well.

can't wait till tomorrow when I open the case and see how it looks. hopefully the crankshaft isn't completely f'd

well...the conclusion is here.

Bearing on Rod #1 was gone. Completely disintegrated. small pieces in the oil pan.

strangely, the rod itself does not look out of round or damages at all. there is very minor scuffing on the crankshaft, but it measures within spec.

everything is for sale - but I am a little hesitant on one thing - the rod - should we junk it or not? any way to test if it's still good? I haven't ever thought about selling used rods, but there seems to be a few on ebay, and since we are trying to recover the investment in this bike, we want to sell everything possible.

Opinions on the used rods - especially the #1 rod that ran without a bearing for an undetermined time?

A good engine rebuild facility/automotive machine shop will have con-rod resizing equipment and the tools to bush the small end if necessary. They should also be able to check out and regrind the crank. Cost will be a factor here.

Aw man...I read this thread like a kids story book. Wheres the happy ending!!??!! The busa cant DIE in the end.....NOOOOOOOOOOO

Yes, my Busa died. But, it was a registered organ donor. So, the medical bills are being covered and dozens of other Busas are getting to live longer and more beautifully in Singapore, Hawaii, NY, NC, MS....RIP Busa.

Bike tucked away for the time being.

Can someone help me identify this? I'm sure I'll find it on re-assembly, but it fell out when I lowered the engine, and I didnt see where it came from.

It goes on a boss under the clutch slave cylinder/sprocket guard cover
