Flies Like a Bus - Turns LIke a Duc

There is no question that the H is the most powerful and fastest stock motorcycle. However, no one is claiming it to be the best handling (although I think it handles very well). The 996 has much less power and speed than the H but very superior handling (according to what I've read. Never had the pleasure to ride one.) I'm sure the 996 is a much more coveted bike than the H.

Carrying this to a logical (my logic) conclusion it seem that H suspension upgrades would provide more rewards to the rider than power upgrades. Of course, drag racers need the extra power but do street and track riders?

Has anyone done much suspension upgrading to their Hayabusas, or looked into it?

This new topic is not intended to insult, criticize, debase, flame, or in any way offend any creatures on the face of the earth - make that the solar system, you never know who is on line.

The Hayabusa's handling limitations are not primarily component-related, but are more basic; weight and ground clearance.

You could make improvements with better components, at a price of course. But for most high-speed road riding, it is pretty decent as a stock setup. The track is a different story.

Probably the best way to make the 'Busa a better-handling bike, for most of us, is to become a better rider.

No doubt Mr. Bear's right -- you wanna go faster, learn to ride better. I'm going back to school next week.

But...take weight off, upgrade the suspension, and you've definitely got a good handling bike -- I was able to sustain higher corner speeds than an SV650 last weekend on tight corners, because he had crap tires and I had 207GPs. The Bus will handle.

well i had a custon swingarm made in the uk. that is two inches shorter. havent had it on long enough to be real sure how it handles, but the time i do have on it feel great........so far........when i get the bike running again i will post again to let you know.

I just don't get it. The H is the fastest and most powerful stock bike made, yet so many owners are spending so much money to make it more powerful and faster, as if the bike had some shortcoming in these areas, and as if they had the skills and the place to ride regularly at speeds in excess of 190 mph or needed accelerate from 0 to 100 in 5 seconds.

On the other hand braking and handling improvements are helpful all the time. If you go around a tight bumpy corner at 40 mph (common on most rides) your turbo, PC II, Yosh pipe, etc. can't help you one bit but a better shock might make a lot of difference.

Last year I rode an R1 and, to me,what that bike needed real bad was a steering damper. But the first order of business for most riders were pipes and jet kits. After a few months, and a lot of crashes, the steering damper started to get popular.

Anyone experimenting with suspension and brakes on the H?

I definitely agree with you Sherm...higher cornering speed is probably the only place the Busa would need work.
But understand that alot of us on here, myself included are serious adrenalin addicts and are addicted to speed.
And would rather go even faster than have more of a plush ride.
Or should i only speak for myself?

Ted is your swingarm a JMC? eccentric axle adjusters? Top braced or bottom braced?
I heard it looks real nice.

Did you have to change the brake caliper anchor arm?

Changing swingarm as well, a few more weeks wait.

Brakes are PFM in front and dual caliper brembo rear.

If you just want a two inch shorter wheelbase
a gsxr 750 swing arm is supposed to bolt on.
Also the single sided mag Ram swing arm from Monaco. Its over $2,000.00 US though. The stock suspension is not bad. Its what the team for Suzuki used at the 24hour race at Willow.

Buddha, since you have never ridden a motorcycle I think you would get quite an adrenilin rush riding a 250 Rebel at 80 mph down a narrow road. It will probably take a while for you to get bored with 190 mph. Don't forget, you can go fast on an H a lot easier than you can go safe.

GSXR swingarm is NOT a simple swap out, the linkage pivot bolts are 12mm instead of 10mm.
The linkage pieces are not the same, the busa swingarm swings on a larger arc.

Willows 24hr Busa's used a *special* Ohlins shock that was custom built for the bikes. The Ohlins production part for the Busa does not have an adjustable ride height Stig Peterson built special shocks for these bikes
at Willow. He also built Rad Greaves #70 Formula Extreme bikes shock.

The production Ohlins shock for the Hayabusa is part # SU841-46 type 46PRCLS

There is a Ohlins web site at: OHLIN.NL.COM

The Race Applications Monaco (RAM) swingarm is available in aluminum approx.$2000+ or magnesium for an additional 3 pound weight loss for $3000+. RAM has three differant brake set ups, one is standard and the other two are options. You must buy a new rear wheel for the RAM arm from either Marchesini or Dymag(these special wheels are a RAM spec).

Sherm you said it.
"It will probably take a while for you to get bored with 190mph"
Thats the idea.
I need a bike thats ridiculously fast, and can create speeds which aren't necessary at all...for years to come.
But at the same time is a great day to day motorcycle that is reliable and looks cool as hell.
I do not have the patience or money to play around with, and if i did i would have the first 2000 available and take my time on it.
Am i a extremist?maybe
Am i an idiot? No,not with life and death situations
Am i an extreme idiot? Most of you guys probably think so,but thats ok.
