What are the metal pegs coming out the sides of the front used for? My first guess is crash guards? Pic is attached...

Yes, crash bungs, guards, sliders, frame sliders, etc.

They are frame sliders. They are to keep as much of body of the bike off the ground in case of a crash or fall.

My 'girl' is having those installed as I type this! Good protection from a low side or a tip.
