Fuel Gauge Question

thanks guys, great responses.

Here's an easy way to check your fuel guage for accuracy! Fill her up and run it down until the guage reads exactly 1/2. fill that puppy up and if it holds 2.7 gallons, it's nuts on. If it holds more or less, you can remover the screws around the filler and gently pull the float out enough to bend the float wire up or down slightly. It doesn't take much so be gentle. It may take a couple/three times to get it nuts on.

I have performed this task on a number of busa's and it works quite well. I have not performed this adjustment on the 08. I checked my 08 and it's right on at 1/2 tank so no adjustment needed.

Wow this is a great idea! I'm gonna have to try this. However, wont this also make it stay on full longer and show complete empty when it still has some left?

danath, you can adjust your float to make your gauge register however you like. You can have the gauge show empty when there is still a half tank if you like. If you want your gauge to be accurate showing full when it's full and empty when it's empty, the method I recommended works well.

No matter how your gauge reads, your fuel light will not be affected. The blinking fuel light is actuated by a sensor in the tank. The fuel float has no affect on when your light comes on.

True. However with the float adjustment your little red needle will be spot on. I average 180 miles damn near completely empty running 87octane.

I run 92 octane as recommended and do mostly commute miles now(50 miles one way to work, summertime is harder riding). I get 200 to 220 per tank. I just watch my trip meter and fill up at 200 miles. Reguardless of how empty I am. The light usually comes on at 205-210. I have gone 223 miles on one tank. Light had been on a while when I finally filled up. But I just don't trust I will be a near a station when I need it. I live out in BFE. (Do not ask "What's a BFE?, :rulez:)

When I ride harder in the summer or do twisties I can get 170-180 a tank. I admit I drive kinda grandma-ish. Faster than traffic but under the "needs to be pulled over" speeds.

I do love this bike though. These wet frosty mornings are starting to get scary though. May not be commuting for much longer.

I'm gonna have to do this to mine.
