Gear and levels of protection

Managed 220 kmh (<140) this morning on my SoCal fwy commute. As Bumblebee said, "steady at those speeds".
Nice! Good ol' Cali commuting.

I am so bloody happy I bought a busa. To be completely honest, my gixxer 250 was so boring after 9 months.

But this busa... I honestly haven't had this much fun, since I first played WoW as a kid, many many years ago.

Helicopter crash.
Hi. Yes The piolet was shot, but we were only 50 to 60 feet off the gtound so he was abele to start a an auto rotate before. he died so it was not a hard crash. A nother bird landed to pick us up but there was no room for me so I stayed behind I held off 40 to 60 VC with my M60 after I was out of ammo one came at me with his knife that was when I got staber in my right hand as a gun ship pushed then back a slick landed and picked me up. I was latet awarded a Bronze Star with a V for Valor.

I watched Matt Miladin crash at VIR over a dozen years ago, he low sided on the back straight away...at 164 mph.
He jumped up running out of his slide, and reportedly got a bruise on his elbow, lol.
So the top gear of the day then worked just fine.
But as said, impacting anything reduces your odds quite a bit.
All the armor out there can only do so much in terms of internal injuries.
Having great gear is really smart, but if you're still concerned even with that on..........

Hi everyone,

Some rough thinking and hopefully an interesting discussion.

If someone were in full CE 2 leather gear, head to toe (chest, back, elbow, shoulder, full feet and leg, femur/thigh and lower back), including a top rated neck brace. Full carbon fibre helmet (AGV).

What sort of collision do you think this person would still likely be written off in.

So let's quantify some major variables:
  • speed
  • collision with another object
  • what the other object may be (concrete barrier or another vehicle)
  • speed of other object if it was moving
I think on a perfectly clear track with no objects, other than rubber tires for barriers, with this gear, at even 190m/h you could survive (assuming you didn't get mangled by your bike itself).

Now collision with another object, I don't know. If you hit another car or barrier at 2
190m/h, I think you might be fscked, even with this gear - but I'm not sure it's guaranteed, depending on where the impact occurred on your body, you may have a snowball's chance in hell at living.

I'm debating the above with some people.

Share your thoughts please.
Techair 10 airbag system. No CE levels of protection will match an airbag system. Especially since CE armor never covers collarbone impacts. CE2 and airbags together is the way to go. I run the old Techair race and it's an amazing system but the new Techair10 covers you down to your hips. Can't beat that.

This is how I'm doing it next year. Airbag and 6D helmet. I've crashed a couple times and the current helmet technology will barely save you from falling down nevermind protecting your brain. Yes the shell will protect you from a sliding crash, but an impact with your head and the ground, and good luck.

For those who havent had a TBI or three, trust me they are not fun. Took 5 years after the last one to stop having episodes. Episodes included, blurred vision, loss of balance, no idea where you are or what you are doing etc....Kinda like Brandon...lol

It's good to see you back in regular conversation again sir, and making good jokes, lmao
I love my old school Joe Rocket leathers, but I am really interested in the airbag jackets, as well as the new helmet tech.
Looking forward to seeing more info posted about them.

I haven't bothered buying either one yet as my bike won't be ready this year. I will definately post reviews and stuff when I get them.

Bike is having the fuel system redone. New lines, injectors, regulator, filter, and maybe pump too (might as well).

I'm trying to start moving again. Its been absolutely horrible and I don't wish it on anyone. But I'm still here and still trying to stay above ground.

This is a loaded question... you could die at 50 km/h with full gear and airbag depending on the crash or could walk away unharmed. Your chances of being horribly maimed or killed on the street even in full gear is so high.... gear saved me from dying (helmet) but my riding gear didn't do anything it was barely damaged and gauntlet style gloves didn't save my hands or wrists the left one peeled off like a banana. Wear gear but remember it's only going to save you in minor crashes the major ones will just keep your limbs intact and not scattered all over the highway. Just to many variables for street riding.

One extra point BUY EXPENSIVE HELMETS!!!! by far the most important piece of gear... don't buy those ruroc trash or icon trash spend the money and get race proven helmets!!! Stay away from mod type.

I’ll disagree with going out and buying an expensive helmet. Expensive doesn’t equal safer. I have gone down (flipped over the bike, over a car and landed on a sidewalk) in an AGV K3. It was about $250 and it protected me well. I look for a safety rating from more than one safety institution. ECE,SHARP, SNELL. I’ve read that DOT is useless and the batre minimum. With the higher end helmets, you pay more for features and not more safety. More vents, wider field of vision and/or light weight. I use an Arai now and it’s more comfortable but I wouldn’t hesitate to use a mid tier helmet from a reputable brand.

i think ruroc is garbage and is only popular because of the influencers promoting them and the heavy marketing on social media.

Agvs are amazing helmets with a racing background I'll agree with even the entry lvl ones, one of the few! Ece is the gold standard for motorbikes snell is the gold standard for auto racing. I've seen a ruroc split in half and the kid died.... and they charge a premium price for them. But people buy them for the graphics....

I’d pay $100 at most for a ruroc to display as artwork. The only good thing are the graphics.

Agree with DougE: DOT means nothing. Try Snell or ECE
Make sure the pads are removable AND have removable layers within the pad (fine-tuning adjustment fit)

Make sure the foam is EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), and dual (or triple) density (low EPS/High EPS)

Shell - avoid thermoplastic. Polycarbonate is barely acceptable. Fiberglass is what you want with aramid & carbon fiber (which strengthens the fiberglass)

CE means nothing (usually)

Here's my source (Ryan Fortnine Vid). 4 yrs old but worth watching.

There's anew standard FIM. Basically what you have to have in Moto2 3 and GP. And even that is being upgraded this year to FIM2. Way beyond Snell or ECE 2.

Just wear full gear. Most don’t. Helmet, gloves, jacket and boots is what most riders wear. Some, not even boots. Many (many) have no protective gear below their jacket. Nothing you can do about obstacles with or without gear. If you haven’t thought of them, MX style hard shell knee and shins guards you can wear under jeans work very well. Cost about $20+. Of course these folks don’t need any protection….

You can’t fix Stupid sometimes

I think, like most of us, I try to add to, or upgrade, my gear over time. Start with the basics and go from there. I always learn something from these conversations.

Off-road I fell all the time. Then I would add a bit or bob to my kit to reduce the owie factor next time.

Thankfully I have never fallen on the street. I used to write crash estimates on bikes occasionally. Sometimes a slip and fall thing, but usually another vehicle was involved.

Yeah, only thing I'm missing is an airbag system. Still want to do my homework there. Can you wear it with a neck brace though?

Airbag isn't gonna do jack poop for your spine, legs and arms, is it? So yeah, you need the CE armor there.

Do you plan on wearing a neck brace while street riding?
