Gen 1 Fuel Filter Mod & Pump Replacement

Thread revival...at least it's a recent post though! :D

Got the fuel pump in and pulled off the tank this morning. Fuel pump assembly looks pretty clean!

The tank inspector drowned...WTF??
Tank looks great except for the trapped tourist and those pellets...not sure what they are from.

Any way to empty the rest of the tank (without a mess) besides sucking a hose? I rode it beyond the warning light, but there is still about 1/2 gallon left.

Dumped mine into a 5 gal bucket. Then used a suction hose. For the final bit I taped a big handful of blue paper shop towels to a long screwdriver and sopped it up. Had a small amount of sediment that I got with a shop vac.

Which hole did you dump it out of? top spout area? Just don't want to make a mess...

Before I cut apart the new fuel pump...any reason I should really be replacing it other than "I'm already in here"? I can still return it to amazon and save myself the $90...
I also have to order a pre-screen because Oreilys website lied and they want $20 for that little bugger!

That’s a good question, off the top of my head I believe I looked up which was the positive terminal on the injector, that sounds like something I would do anyhow. As to weather or not it makes a difference???

The tank has no rust that I can see. That junk was all dirt and varnish. I am thinking about using my power washer to break up the rest of the dirt inside but I don’t want to make rust. Any suggestions for tank cleaning?

The hole is a 3/16. I used @chrisjp write up for the drill size

@Kiwi Rider damn brother! Johnny on the spot! In Houston as well. You rock buddy
Any idea where this thread is

I ordered one of the new ones with all that poop out of it already. I’m searching my neighborhood for the Amazon guy.

To save the paint, I picked up a 20$ oil vacuum pump from harbor freight and just threw a hose and zip tied it to the end. put the Tank on a chair or tall box, pull the gas up the tube until you're a few inches from the vac pump and pull it off below the tank height so the pressure differential dumps it into a bucket.

Save the gas to either filter and throw back in, or play it safe and soak some old parts in your new cleaning fluid. I used mine to backflush the old fuel pump filter to get all the plastic bits out so they don't end up in the injectors if the in-line filter fails :beerchug:
