Had an accident, help me spot the damage?

Hey Yall,

I was on a long ride this weekend and my hoodie was strapped onto the top of my bag, the plastic clips for the strap let go under speed and my hoodie got sucked into the chain :( I quickly pulled off, safely - thank god. The oil and coolant dumped after I got onto the side of the road.

I was hoping yall could take a look and give me some pointers on what all is busted. I am hoping the motor is okay because I got off the road so quickly and the oil dumped after I stopped.

I see for sure:
- Engine sprocket cover
- Gear shift cover
- Water pump
- Chain guard (possibly wheel bearings)

I can't tell but I think the crankcase is in tact.

What else do you guys see from these pics? Anything else I should look at?

That's terrible.
Can you remove the front sprocket?
I would hose it off with brake cleaner, and get everything clean.
Make sure there is enough oil in it, at least to the lower lines on the site glass.
Then crank it and look for leaks.
Don't worry about coolant, as it will take it a few minutes to get warm, and all you are doing is looking for leaks from cracks anywhere in the cases, until you find them all.
The oil and coolant should start coming out almost immediately after start up.

From your questions above; the rear wheel bearings should be fine, and not effected at all.
The rear sprocket may be bent, check it on a flat surface.
The cush drives should be ok, but the hub is cast aluminum, so check it for cracks, or it may even be slightly twisted.
Front sprocket should be ok.

Do Not reuse that rear tire either.
It's soaked with oil and coolant, and a slide waiting to happen, even if you clean it all off the surface, it's done.

It's very unlikely the axle is damaged either, but just be sure to make sure it and the axle blocks are bolts weren't bent during the chain derailment.
Since the shirt caused it to jump vs too much slack, the sudden impact that derailed it could have done more or less than any of us would expect.
It's suprising, even hard to belive sometimes what happens during things like this.
But, Hopefully your cases are good and damage is minimal.

Hate to say it, but judging by the amount of oil under her, you cracked case. I hope and pray that's not so, but that looks like all her oil basically.

Agree with VIPER must have cracked the case , where else would that amount of oil come from,as said before remove front sprocket for further inspection

There's a big hole in the gear shift cover, doesn't that have oil in it?

I don't see any crack in the case, but doesn't mean its not there.

I guess I just gotta get this sucker apart and see whats the damage.

The sprocket cover has the slave cylinder for the hydraulic clutch in it, and the push-rod passes through the case.
There isn't alot of fluid to leak out from the clutch line and resivoir.
Unless all of it colored the coolant in that big puddle on the ground.
But, it would be great if that were all and a waterpump.

can´t find the clutch push rod on the pics.

was it bent / cracked ?

because outta its seal lots of oil will bubble if no rod sticks in the seal

so NEVER ! start engine without the rod or something else that cloggs the seal´s hole
or you´ll create a little sea of oil beside the bike by only starting the engine for even a second or two

@amirpc

baaaaaaad baaaaaaaaaaaad movie #3005

that shows me that the bearing in the crankshaft housing of the shift shaft axle is broken / scrap

and all the others don´t show me the push rod

the hole in the seal made the lill oil ocean under the bike - believe in me

and the scrappy bearing causes a complete opening of the engine
with all angels in the sky you´ll be lucky and the housing ist not demaged and only the bearing is dead.

but i fear that @VIPER is right and the case is really cracked and thus only scrap.

zyl, head, trans, crank, generator, clutch etc. should be ok - i guess
but at least i guess the engine is around the crank´s housing only for scrap box

get, if available, a preowned gen2 crank housing and rebuild the engine with that and the old arts of your´s
the only middle expensive way to get the bike running again, i would say.

you face a hard job of ca. 25 h of wrenching, assuming a well-equipped workshop that you call your own.

to your info - a 30000 km old gen2 engine costs here in germany around 3800-4200 €

Well I have comprehensive coverage with my insurance. I should be able to file a claim and get it fixed or at least a check to help, yeah?

Just filed a comprehensive claim with insurance. I technically had an accident while driving, so I'm hoping that this can at least offset the cost some.

man?
all best wishes me and we all can send you to get this that way done.

but what will happen if the insurance get knowledge about the truth?

they´ll kick you out and no other ins. will take you as a client again.
what then?

that risk you want to go for a stupidity that you have to pay for now?
even it costs you some 4000 bucks?

sorry, but that, in my view, would be the biggest stupidity.

I can guarantee you people will be checking the stuff they have tied to their bikes after reading this..

A Hayabusa as stout and sturdy as it is can't stand up to an insecure hoodie

I told the insurance the truth. I opened a claim and said my jacket got sucked into chain while driving. I don't know if they'll coverage it, but I wouldn't lie.

Pull in the clutch lever to see if you have

I know oil will drip or even spew out of the clutch pushrod hole, but; explain how there is no oil trail below the pushrod seal?
Even if the oil sprayed out with force, it should still be visible from where it dripped down below it afterwards.
But, if oil did not come out there, that is much worse, as it had to have come out from a crack.
The sprocket housing stayed on the engine, and the OP took it off, so he must have removed the clutch pushrod as well.

Unlucky.
Hope for the best but prepare for the worst as they say.
I'd consider ensuring she turns over freely by hand first before firing her up.
Then as message 2.
Good luck
