Helmet Communications - Chatterbox, other?

can you use any GMRS/FRS radios with it?

Yes, I believe you can. I have a pair of Motorola 2 pin radios that would work, they are GMRS/FRS. But you will get better distance with the GMRS frequencies. Kenwood I mentioned is a commerical grade radio that is LOUD and CLEAR. I think UncleSteve has a kenwood, not sure about Cap or LCB. When I have the funds, its the setup I am purchasing.

Autocom L-1 $200
or
Autocom Super pro - $300

Icom System - $120 (allows bike to bike)
Cigarette lighter addapter to power you icom - $20

My autocom Prices are cheap because I looked around and kept checking ebay. Those are new prices as well.

After spending around $400 on two chatterboxes, I wish I would of just spent the money on a autocom system. Would of had a lot less headaches and lower blood pressure.

Because it depends on what you want the system to do - it has a lot of options and not everyone wants the same thing while they're riding. It's also versatile so if you change your priorities, the system can be adapted without buying a whole new system. It also depends on who is going to install it - obviously it will cost less if you do the work yourself and just buy the components you need.

For example - my riding preference is (in this order) music/mp3, comm w/other riders, GPS, Radar Det, cell phone. I also wanted ear buds, not speakers. I don't have the time or the skill to install this stuff so I contacted Kieth in Tulsa to set me up and do all the work. He completely wired the white bike including the PTT, set up the tank bag with all the wiring and components inside, provided the connections and/or extensions for a passenger, set up 3 helmets - 2 with ear buds, 1 with speakers and provided the wiring I would need if I decide to make the GPS my primary output with the cell bluetooth'd to it and a memory card for my tunes. He did ALL the work, did an excellent job and the system works exactly as I requested.

My cost : approx $1500.00. That may seem like a lot but after pricing other stuff that can't come close to what this system is capable of, you won't hear me complain. But as I said, there are many options with the Autocom so your cost may vary.

DAMN! Now THATS rig!

Yup. Some people spend that kind of money on custom paint, some on extended swingarms, some on nitrous systems, some on head-turning bling... I have no such aspirations. And I can move it from bike to bike and have all the same features without having to buy any additional equipment other than the wiring from my fuse block.

How long ago did you have this work done?

I went to the Autocom site and it doesn't look like they are the distributor anymore. Can these units still be purchased? If so from where, can anyone post a link?

I bought a dual pack Sena SMH10 at the local bike show for $330 and love them. New base units to use headphones are $40, but the speakers are great quality. Their system is very simple and up to 4 headsets can be paired for conference calling as well as conference phone calls with the newest firmware. I use my phone for all needs (gps, music, and calls) and have had no issues at all under 120
I put a couple of USB power ports on the bike to charge them, but my knees and wrists cramp long before the battery gives way

speakers in mine absolutely rocks, I love them, loud and clear, I can hear everything while doing 100MPH. what Exactly yours suck at?

I couldn't hear them well enough to want to use them. I know they recommend fiddling with placement, but I didn't want to. I wanted to plug in earbuds and be done with it. Fiddling with gadgets cuts into go time.

Now that I wired in a stereo plug, they are useful. I'd like that option built-in. Other than that, A2DP would be nice but I knew they lacked it when I pulled the trigger.

In fairness, I will admit to saying "huh" a lot. My hearing has been abused over the years. Glad they work for you. I like them fine with earbuds

Actually, I had to contact him recently to get the wiring for the FJR and his number changed - try 918-630-4665.

If you get voicemail, leave a message and he'll get back to you. He took care of my bike about a year ago on my way to Eureka Springs.
