helmet discussion

I am willing to stop wearing HJC if I can find something that fits. Granted I have not tried an Arai, but I have had a large Shoei that was putting too much pressure on my forehead and an XL that was just too big. I have been wearing XL HJC's for about 8 years now but they are noisy and no very vented.

Seeing some Arai's on sale for the $400 range, what would be the right model for me?
You can change out the cheek pads and liners in the Shoei to get a better fit. Not too sure about other brands, but I'm sure someone will chime in.

I have had a KBC helmet. I could ride all day with it. Now that I have been wearing an Arai I will not go back. The fit and function is far better than the KBC. I can also find repair parts for the Arai almost anywhere I go. Shield swaps are a breeze. A friend of mine recently switched to an Arai. I haven't seen him wear his other helmet since. Last time I asked about the other helmet he cringed. I know it's still a good helmet. He just doesn't like the thought of going back to it.

There are a lot of great helmets out there right now, but I will stay with Arai. I know they don't skimp on any aspect of building a great helmet. Everything about it says quality.

Dont get me wrong, HJC makes a good quality helmet. Hell my first helmet was HJC. But after wearing a SHOEI and then a Suomy the comfort and quality level is too great to go back. My g/f wears an icon mainframe, i hate it with a passion. It fits like crap, feels like the padding is lined with a scotch pad, and is noisy as hell ... yet she loves it. Go figure.

DAYUM!!! I've never seen a helmet in that size before. :beerchug:

So you understand my problem? I have yet to come across a high end helmet that fits. I can get a 2X Shoei on but then I would rip my ears off to remove it.

My high school football coach special ordered me a helmet and said the next size bigger was a #5 zinc washtub with the side cut out!!

yeah i understand what your saying here.......but i have worn alot of different ones and i will stick with my cheap hjc's i guess :banghead:

I wouldn't say HJC's are "cheap". Take a look at some of the crap out there. The lids in the stealership that I bought my bike .....most of em were a joke. Never even heard of em before.
Like others have said. They are DOT & SNELL rated. So I'm sure your HJC will serve you just fine. :D

It's a dilemma, to be sure!!! Good luck, bro! That's an unusual situation.

I think I have to bite the bullet and try Arai. I was always weary of spending too much.

I can't complain as my last HJC AC-11 was $99 on closeout.

I think its the arai that was kinda flat faced and when i wore it at high speeds it would want to hit my face??? I've only had 3 kinds (shoei, arai, and hjc). My current one is hjc. I like the comfort but not the vent. bottom line.....any helmet is better than no helmet.:beerchug:

I have a GMAX, and a Suomy. The GMAX is 2X as loud, and bounces around alot at speed (it has those huge scoops on them). The Suomy is tigher, yet more comfortable. Still loud, but not nearly as 'bouncy'; and the bling value is alot higher. Frankly, the real difference is: WHAT THE MARKET WILL BEAR....I suspect that once the high end stock depletes, you'll see more of the lower priced helmets selling than the expensive ones.

cheap helmet...ok.
expensive helmet...ok.

Its physics. Good expensive helmets are very hard, and thus transfer more G force to the brain in a crash that a cheap helmet.

A cheap helmet won't stand up to a high speed impact thou.

The snell test...they drop some huge weight onto a helmet from a big height.

If yer in the type of crash that is similar to the snell test, your going to have bigger problems than that.

Been there,done that.

As the old saying goes: "You dress for the crash, not the ride".

BUT...how do you know what kind of crash it's gonna be?

You don't.

The better answer: Wear a helmet that gives you confidence. One that you can see out of.One that won't cause you to lose focus or concentration because you are...too hot,too cold, uncomfortable, one thats too big and slops around, one thats too small and irritates you.

I've been there and done that.

The ultimate. Dont hit yer head. If you do,there could be concequences.

A K-Mart helmet. It will crush easy and take up some of the impact lessening the g forces transferred to you brain.

A 700 buck Shoei looks way cooler thou.

My honest opinion...some sort of full face. Try and save your jaw,and your teeth. Dental surgery does not feel that nice...trust me.

When your head its a car(like mine did) I really dont think it matters that much. Your BRAIN comes to a sudden stop,in more ways than one.

Soft helmet, hard helmet. Try and guess your crash.

RSD.

You all can buy your shoe or arai, and spend 600 every 2-3 years. But I did some search and trying on helmets and found a perfect helmet. The Sparx, this helmet is ECE-22-05 safety, your helmet that you pay'd 600 is only snell and dot. ECE-22-05 is much harder test to pass. Also this helmet has a 5 year warranty, try one with other brands. And also for $130.00 NEW u get a helmet with 2 shields (sun and clear), good vents, cool graphics, ear buds (cheap but the thought that counts), and replecament vents. And if you have a crash all you have to do is send the helmet back with a police report and you will get a new one for FREE. So $130.00 for a good, lite, helmet. Beats the Shoe 1000 weight. Again this is just my $0.02. Economy is hard so finding safe good price helmet is what I needed.

I think you maybe on to something here as long as it vents well and is some what aerodynamic I would buy one.

ok alot of members are needing info on helmets it looks like. i have a seemingly dumb question. why would you spend in upwards of 600 dollars on one and your supposed to replace it after a couple years? can anyone answer me that one! i mean honestly with the economy the way it is why spend all that extra. ok guess i am a tight arse..please post i am curious..thanks

Value is in the pocketbook of the beholder, but it always comes down to this: I want one and I can afford it, so I buy it. Don't need to explain it to anyone.

If I want one and can't afford it, I'll probably buy it anyway.

WTF life's too short.

I always bought into the $50 helmet for a $50 head.... I've worn some of the HJC lids and they are perfectly fine lids. I've riden with a RF900 for the past 5yrs and it was a great lid. I replaced it with an X11 and holy crap its a HUGE difference. Fit is better, its lighter, it rides better, way cooler, etc etc.

I think its all personal preference really... but if you ride with a light weight cool flow lid vs one that's neither, you'll see the difference. If its worth the $$ to you, only you can decide that
