High Gas Prices!  Have you considered a Hybrid?

I finally traded in my Suzuki Aerio that I've had for the last few years. Was never satisfied with it and it got terrible gas milage for a small car. I traded it in on a 2008 Honda Fit. My last tank of gas was all city driving and I got 31.6 mpg on it. The car i traded in on this one got 27 mpg on the highway! I call that a big improvment! I've already tinted the windows and i made myself an intake from parts off the shelf at AutoZone. The intake improved my mpg by 2 miles already...

My '06 405hp Corvette gets 19 city and about 25 hiway driving HARD and FAST (if driven in granny mode she'll get about 23/30)- that's good enough for me, so I'll keep her. Now for the dancing banana ->

I want to check out the new Tahoe Hybrid. I am not completely sold on electric/gas vehicles. There are a lot of new vehicles that can run flex fuel, but there is only one place in Tulsa to my knowledge you can fill them up. Still though, thats pretty good mileage, but with 4 kids it makes it hard to fit in one.
I can't see the advantage of E85 yet"¦. other than less environment impact by using a renewable resource. E85 is cheaper, but the cost per mile is about 10% higher even with E85 being about 15-20% cheaper to buy per gallon.   Todays cost here is 3.15 for E85 vs 3.65 for 87ul.   .  Performance is down slightly in flex vehicles. If a vehicle was E85 only, they could bump the compression a couple of points to pick up the performance (and the mileage a bit)

I think we have 2-3 E85 locations. I know a couple of Fuleman locations have it.
E85 is even close to being a renewable resource.

The ROI on a hybrid is almost 40 years before the gas savings catch up to the markup above the base 4cyl model gas version

Meant to say "not even close"  Cuz it's not.
So, you don't feel ethanol is a renewable resource?  Or the other 15%
No I dont. It takes more fossil fuel to produce ethanol than what is netted. Not really renewable when ya think about it.

Try the new Diesel TDI in an Audi A5

3l TDI Quatro

o-100km/h 5.8 sec. 250 Topspeed (electronical limited)

in mix about 7l/100km

good for long Distance . f you drive in town or urban(much stop and go) take a hybrid
on highway you wont have any savings because the hybrid runs on fuel , with the additional weight of the batterie.

There the new Diesels are unbeatabel with abou 40 mpg and 200HP (if needed)

But
i ride a 5.7 Hemi as company-car
I m not an american , but saw it as my last chance to have a V8

See my previous post.

This is exactly what I am talking about.. You can have your efficiency AND V-8 acceleration with torque numbers no standard V-8 can touch. When I move back to the US, my car will be a diesel. Maybe the "small" duramax scheduled to be sold soon by GM. Knowing them though, it will be compromised of performance.

What does Busa Jules have to say?

Definitely not in the US.. The grain supply is being hit hard by the so called "demand" e-85 has put on the market.
A country like Brazil with a tiny population relative to that of the US has a much better prospect of viably using Bio-Fuels for its entire domestic needs due to the "ratio of people to cars to available land"..

The production of Ethanol is a big part of the economic problems in the States. Ethanol plants are popping up all over driving the price of corn thru the roof. That in turn has driven the cost of everything else thru the roof.

The Brazilians are slashing/burning the rain forest to grow sugar beets for ethanol and calling it renewable & green. I want to put my carbon footprint up Al Gore's #$^.

Yeah..

I figured somebody would bring it up. Don't forget the Soybeans for bio-diesel.

They are destroying the rainforest according to National Geographic and various other pubs. However, if that was my country, I am sure that I wouldn't want outside influences try to control my domestic issues. Deforestation in Brazil is like the Gold Rush, everybody who's anybody is trying to get a piece of the action. American firms benefit from that activity, Cargill, ADM, NewHolland, John Deere. American people have jobs because of what is happening to the Rain Forest. High quality, furniture grade, rainforest lumber is being consumed by Americans at rate the contributes to the acceleration of deforestation.

MEH, I've just quit looking. You figure that the higher gas prices might cost me a $3-6K over the next year or so. That sucks, but it's hardly newsworthy, so yeah...

Not to mention that I now have 3 machines in the garage that all require Premium Unleaded so I'm really not trying to be looking at the price of gas...

Though I did intentionally stop at $66.60 cents tonight.

Professor, I enjoy your humble yet learned posts. I have a Scion XA automatic trans and it gets 38 mpg...roomy inside and nice looking too. I think it's important that we are all looking at alternatives to big monster vehicles that get 10-12 mpg. Someday they will all be used for roadside decorations. I am gearing up and modifying my Kawasaki KLR 650 to be my work vehicle (until the snow comes) and expect 55 mpg with a 6.5 gal. tank for serious range. I figure it'll save me hundreds of dollars in a short period of time.
And regarding those that say a Prius is $10k more than non hybrids that still get good mileage (like my Scion)...it's a question of supporting the movement toward alternative technology in the marketplace...so the $ spent serves a greater purpose than just one's personal finances. I don't care if some people have to have 400 hp in their commute vehicle, I can only answer to my own values about what we leave to successive generations. For me, denying that fossil fuel is finite, limited and polluting is just wrong. Having said that, it doesn't mean I don't love performance...and my Hayabusa...but we have to reduce our oil consumption in some ways.
