How many fingers do you use for the clutch/brake?

Any of you fellas know "WHY" the msf course requires using all four fingers for clutch and brake? :dunno:

2 for clutch and 1 for brake unless I have to stop really fast which is rare because I never speed.
Honest

Tuf thats a good question and I asked instructor that and now forget what he said but I have always felt safer leaving one or two wrapped around grip so I can hold on. With all 4 off and on lever I feel you have no grip. I think it was something along the lines that if you do go down with one or two left on grip you stand a better chance of losing them ?

For the BRC I'd think its a safety deal, so you don't have inexperienced riders gassing and braking at the same time. You're either on the brake or on the gas, not both.

Four on the clutch, two on the brake. I feel like all four on the clutch gives me better, more precise control. Two on the brake are enough to lift the rear tire, so I figure that's enough.

It is indeed a safety issue. You must remember the MSF is dealing mostly with new riders. The idea is if you use one or two (Prefer 2) fingers on either or both levers you must have the lever set to insure you don't pinch your two remaining fingers between the lever and the grip. If the brake lever is set to close it pinches the two outer fingers and limits the amount of brake available and can easily cause a crash.

Same with the clutch lever. If it's not set properly when using the two finger thing, the two remaining fingers can be pinched and cause the clutch not to release creating all sorts of problems for the new rider.

Thus the state wants every new rider to use all four fingers around the lever. Good idea in my opinion. The DOL will pay attention as well when you are taking the riding test to get your endorsment. Using less than four fingers will get you a point deduction!

Clutch: all fingers all the time.
Normal breaking 2 fingers
OMG BREAKING all fingers

Same for me, on a clear road when I need to gently slow. If there is any traffic I cover the brake with all four.
