My wife was born in New York and her father was transferred to Vermont for several years when IBM opened a facility there. She absolutely loved it. This would have been mid to late 90's when she was in high school. It is definitely a whole different culture, or at least was back then. Way different from New York. As posted above mostly white, lots of guns and hunting, lots of libertarians, and beautiful country with lots of trees. Sounds like just the place for me! Pretty similar to rural Minnesota actually.
