I'm working out

Just remember not to base your goals on a certain weight. Remember as you build muscle even a little it does weigh more then fat. It is better to basis your goals on Bf%. Or go with before or after pics. Only weigh yourself maybe once or at most twice a week and usually at the same time during the day. Peoples bodyweigh vary( some mroe then others) from day to day. Have some one measure your bf% at beginning then maybe every couple months or when ever you feel you need the encouragement.
It would be good do go ahead and start walking now to just into a routine. Also remember that what you eat is about 75% of being able to obtain your goals.

Also another book that would be nice as it shows how to do alot of the exercises and some basic routines is Arnold's Bodybuilding book. Do not have to follow the workouts but explains the exercises very well. Also make sure you start out very slow and light when you first start out.

The most important thing to remember is perfect the form of the exercise before you worry about anything else. Will help keep you from injury.

Yort is right, you could actually gain wieght but lose all the flab( or least most of it), the older you get the last rubber tire is tough to get rid of. Definitely start to walk to work on the cardio and if your not too fat do some jogging. You don't have to jog constantly, start a short distance then walk, jog again then walk. Don't expect to get everything at once, then you'll get too sore and quit. The same goes for the weights, start slow and move up or do more reps.
Don't look down on basic old fashion calistenics. You could start now with push ups, pull ups, situps, stretching, balance ball work (killer workout). These types of things will keep a lean body mass while giving you some mild cardio. By doing things like this I can keep my heartrate up over 120 and up to 160 after pullups. Machines and gizmos are not always the answer. The answer is to do something you enjoy aand stick with it for a long, long time. AND STOP EATING!!!!

Wow it's funny you brought up this thread.  After being retired for the last 3½ years, shattering an ankle and breaking/splintering the right thumb bone I havnt been able to "push" my ankle or thumb.  Decided to get back into shape myself.  Just made a new purchase.  It's not much but it's good for me because I dont have a spotter.  Got the entire unit, inclined, declined bench w/leg extension, etc (See pic), came with 300lbs of olympic weights and it's a smith machine for $300.00 + tax and it's new.  Sumbeatch took me 8½ hours to put together though.  All 2" tubular steel with reinforced back plates at every bolting/joint.

NICE setup! That would take up my whole apartment, all my time, my life, my strength....maybe I could rent that to my neighbors while I'm at work and make some extra cash.

Thanks for the expereinced input, everyone! VERY good info for a workout newbie like me.

Reporting in: Did the walk this morning. 45 minutes. Very brisk pace. Enough to give myself shin splints halfway through and have to slow up for 5 minutes, then back up to speed.

Just don't go for the bodybuilder look.

Study shows that 85% of women are turned off by bodybuilders.  Ironic that 85% of bodybuilders are turned off by women.
Excuse me? lol

Stats are wrong... yeah I know a lot of women are not attracted to body builder types.. but I would not say it is as high as 85%

And even if it is.. doesnt matter to me. I like the attention I have received from the 15% if the stats are correct

Wow! I'm behind already! Good job. This inspires me to go do a walk after work tonight. Weather should permit.

Also, Wag, I have a message board if you wanna take this offline from here:

http://werkout.proboards75.com/

There's also a calendar on there I have not figured out what to do with yet.

Other goals involved with this are less portions of better food in diet, LESS time infront of computer! A little less riding

You need to quit watching " queer eye for the straight guy" dude.

Why don't you post a pic of yourself and show us what all the women want.

Why is it everyone I know "used to " be huge, ripped, etc.?
Why does every guy under 5'7" beat up guys bigger than me all the time, or have a friend that's twice my size??

smile.gif

Everone who picks up a weight is so afraid of getting "huge". Newsflash-it takes years of hardcore intense training and eating right. All the guys with the bowflex and Tai-bo tapes relax.

What's wrong with the bodybuilder look?! I happen to like it and I really like it when Diesel puts his arms around me. That's a real Man! I'm a pretty big girl and I couldn't possibly be with someone who's smaller than me. I been lifting weights for a long time and I can't stand a guy who doesn't have muscles or has smaller arms than I do.

Spicy and Diesel, it really looks like this thread could use your advice.

I "usetabe" ripped but got lazy. My own damn fault.

Time to get ridda the flab and put the muscles back where they belong.

And yeah, you're right. Most of the "reasons" people give for not working out or otherwise staying fit are pretty lame. My own included.

Since highschool, I had maintained a decent diet of good foods [small portions] and ALWAYS had jobs where I was up moving. I KNEW if I got one of those "Desk jobs" I'd have to PAY and waste time to get a work out. 160-170 lbs was my ideal weight. I felt great, light, mobile... about 4 years ago I got so good at what I do they promoted me to manager mostly behind a desk, and that's when it started... and kept going... and my tummy started to stick out. This is simply rediculous, that to be "successful" you have to have a dormant job, don't get any exercise for 8 hours a day. People say "oh its just that you are getting older and you rmetabolism is slowing down..." BULL! My BODY is slowign down and not doing enough to burn it off LIKE IT SHOULD BE. The gut that I have is DIRECTLY timed to my management job - I been getting "older" for years... I'm ten years past my "motabolism changing" crap... it's THE DESK JOB. Nothing more.

It ends here.

I've almost quit my job twice [well, almost everyday I wake up] and have begged my superiors for demotion with cut salary. I don't care. I prefer to feel alive and vibrant over slothful and stagnant.... just for an extra buck. I still might quit my job soon and switch out of computers totally and drive a truck deliverying for Coke.

This silly workout DVD is my wakeup call... my muse.... my inspiration to get it back. I don't expect to get RIPPED, but I will do everything it asks plus a little more because I will feel GREAT getting back in the habit of living like a human being should: mobile and active.

I haven't gone walking but I am doing my starter stuff daily in the office: 10 pushups, 20 situps, 20 above the head high kicks.

I'm 41, 195 lbs, more gut than bicep. I'm one of those freaks that everyone calls skinny because I am thin but now with a gut. The gut has to go.

I joined the local "Fitness Center" a little over a month ago. Hired the Trainer and all... I was told two weeks of cardio at least 500 calories ever other day before even thinking about getting on the machines...

Good Luck.

I'm starting to feel better all ready...
