Just curious to see what types of jobs some of you may be able to help with. I currently do HVAC controls work. I am involved in the layout, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining of DDC controls. I have quite a bit of experience with computers due to this.
I like working with computers and stuff, but, to be honest, I think I could make better money doing something else. I just can't figure out what it is yet.
We do alot of networking, and graphics type stuff too. But we use our vendor's software, so I don't have any other type of software experience.
I know this all probably sounds a little crazy, but I feel as though I am at a crossroad in my life, and I am curious to see what all is out there and most of you guys and gals seem to have good jobs and good ideas, so a little input would be appreciated.

just kidding. graduate school now.. to be a teacher at university..

i did programming and then did some computer teaching/training.. liked the teaching better than programming.. but you can make lots of money with computers.. i still do it on the sides.. so maybe you could start with that..

do some side work with computers.. like web site development or something like that.. its nice because you can do it on your own time... then if you like it enough.. mabye do it full time.. there are a lot of technical schools that you can finish in less than 2 years.

good luck.

Retired High School Principal here, and a new 'busa owner (traded my FZ 1). While I may be retired, I still consider myself young (53). Taught high school Business and Computer Programming for 10 years before going into administration. While I liked being a Principal, I LOVED teaching. I plan on doing some at the college level.

That's funny, I've been thinking the exact same thing and last week started browsing job-monster.
I do commerical and industrial hvac, been with the same company for nearly 15 years now. Just starting to go through one of my burn-out stages for a number of reasons.

This is going to sound funny buy I actually sent in my resume for a job as a technician at Chuck E. Cheeses. Repairing video games and animatronics...what could be more fun? Hell, I even have my own dedicated game room in my house full of arcade games that I've restored.

Coming back down into reality sucks when you find out that places like that pay $20K to $25K at best. Searching for other jobs just leads to more disappointment when you see what they're offering. Seems like there's a glut when it comes to any job involving computers. One that comes to mind was for a network specialist who would be responsible for installing and repairing networks and phone systems. You need your own vehicle and tools. Pay...$15 an hour! HAHAHA!

Sat down and did the math. 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, total pay package (with benefits) as an HVAC tech where I'm at...a tad shy of $94,000.00. Toss in the loaded '05 E250, all tools and meters, Nextel along with the freedom of being a field tech and I think I'll stick around for a while longer.
I'd be nice if we didn't have to work on RTU's during sub zero temperatures, however I think it would suck even more being trapped in an office or shop everyday for 8 hours a day with a boss watching over you.

I guess what I'm saying is the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Theres alot of good companies here in Knoxville.....I use to be a Customer Sales Rep. for a major vendor so I know alot of HVAC companies around here that would definately look at you....get with me if your interested and I will give you some contacts bro....laters

Parking. Sounds stoopid. But its a billion dollar bid'ness.

About 10% of my job requirement is the installation/maintenace/repair of parking permit dispensers.

There not just crusty, rusty pieces of crud anymore. The models I'm bringing in are solar powered with satellite uplink. The ones I'm after are ones that a customer can call into from their cell phone en route, and not have to attend the unit in the corner of the garage/lot. I'm out of the office,my own boss. 6 weeks paid vacation, paid Christmas shutdown(11 days usually),15 paid sickdays a yr,which get carried over if not used, never worked a weekend yet,if someone calls me at home to ask a question I have the right too 4 hours pay...blah blah blah.
I work for a union. So its always possible to trade jobs, move around. I'd look for union work in the largest company you can find. That,or buy some land and build parking lots. Low overhead, huge return.

One of the other aspects of my job involves alot of freedom aswell. I have a fleet of 49 vehicles to keep running. Dump trucks to mini vans. Last year I brought in our first Hybrid.

Tell you what I'd really love to do thou....

my own motorcycle shop. I could have done it a few times.I have awesome friends. One offered to back me financially. Couldn't do it. Couldn't risk a friends dough.I work for another friend occasionally who owns a shop here in my town. I don't let him pay me thou. I love to help people into the right gear and onto the right bike.

Sometimes its not about the cash.

Sometimes its about having fun, helping people, and doing good work.

I sleep very well at night

dig holes n fill them in 7 days a week / 3 nights a week i drive a garbage truck ! pays my bills! i think?

Good luck Fann....hope ya find what your looking for. Got fired when I was 23, first mortgage and first child on the way. Decided working for someone else was BS. Found an older fella that wanted to retire, worked a couple years for him and then he financed me. Land and companies have doubled in price. Going to sell the weaker of the 2 companies next month for my original purchase price of both companies and land 1996, and lease the new owner 1 of the warehouses.

What I do isn't fun, but I should be done when I'm 45.
