Just bought a 99 with 12k miles on it! What now?

Ok I haven't owned a street bike since shortly after the helmet law was instated in California. I remember in 99 when the Busa came out and I loved it but ended up buying a Vette, then a Z06, and then putting a twin turbo on it. I saw this one owner Busa (owner was 70) and the bike only had 12k miles on it. Back in the day when Lee Sheirtz built my GSXR 750, D&D pipes were the ones to have.

I need to ask what the no BS best performing exhaust is for this bike? I am going to guess that simply replacing the cans don't result in much HP or weight savings. I appreciate the help.

Welcome to the oRg. I cant say for sure which is THE best exhaust for the busa is, there are so many. I guess Brocks for the gen I, others will chime in. Whatever you get, full exhaust and dyno tune for optimal performance. Again, welcome! :welcome:

congrats and welcome. What are your goals/plans for the bike? Just want to upgrade the stockers for a "better" sound/looks? Slip-ons or full system? Or you want to get the most hp/tq?

be sure to have a dealer run the vin to see that the cam chain tensioner recall has been performed. and ive got a full Hindle exhaust on my 99 and love it. good luck!

Brocks will definitely get some votes from a lot of this crowd including myself.

Thanks for the welcome guys. For right now I just want to change out the exhaust.

Does replacing the cans add any value HP or it is mainly just for sound?

I know in the car world people will argue that cat back will increase HP, but IMO on performance vehicles where the exhaust is ok for the stock car...cat backs are more for sound unless modding with headers, cam, forced induction, etc.

But on these bikes...the exhaust is really quiet for stock application. They look like huge cans (not necessarily bad) but I still have to figure it is more about improving the exhaust note vs. adding andy neglible HP...right???

If given two choices what would the recomendations be for:

1.) just replacing the cans, make...sound..fitment, performance (weight & hp)
2.) full header/exhaust...I saw that Alien head thing and it looked like business.

Thanks

Here is a pick of me and the Bike.

:welcome: to the ORG!:cheerleader:

besides the sound (if you like loud?) there is not much to gain in just some slip-on cans.
a full exhaust can help you drop around 40lbs off the bike tough.

i wouldn't mod it too much. it seems to have worked just fine until now with minimal mods.

with those bags, are you going to tour on it?

i have always loved that color.

About the exhaust, one of the last few month's edition of Super Street Bike Magazine had a write up for exhausts (on a ZX14) and broke it down by Full system or slip-ons. The overall weight savings, HP gain, etc. I would find a copy for the education. It was really quite an easy way to view most of the exhausts out there.

I have a 4-1 Yoshimura R-55 on my Gen 1. It wasn't easy to mount, I had to custom fabricate a mid-pipe to make it fit.

Thanks everybody for the welcome and comments.

none you have a stock 99 copper. put it away and get a gen2
I find value in your response. Interestingly the guy who sold me the bike told me that people in the Busa community might have this reaction about the bike and I thought he was just giving me some sales pitch, glad to see he was being sincere in his approach in selling me the bike. I picked it up for $6k, asking price was $7999.

:welcome: to the oRg  Great looking 99. You have an unrestricted beauty that runs just fine without modification. See cheese mans response.

Brocks if you must. Do the research, most pipe makers will tell you what to expect from their pipes.

Slip-ons DO NOT add to performance IMHO

First off welcome to the org :welcome: and there is a wealth of knowledge here on the site so I hope you make use of it. BTW def nice to see a clean copper.
IMHO you have to decide what your end goal will be with the bike. With the numerous exhaust combinations for the busa it's kinda overwhelming at first. I've had a few different combinations on my busa and there were advantages to each one. HMF makes a awesome full dual exhaust standard mount for the bike that has a deeper more mellow tone to it that shouldn't interfere with the bags you have on the bike and will def increase the power of the bike. The Brock's Alien Head that I have on mine is a loud SOB  The air filter is really your choice K&N and BMC seem to be the more popular and both will allow the engine to get more air than the stocker. As for tuning again there is a few choices out there ranging from self tuning systems to the Power Commander, the PC is very easy to install and programs are provided via a disc when you purchase it. These few mods will net you more power and make your bike a bit more interesting to ride. Hope this helps.

You've got the icon of Busas. Leave it as is. Congrats and welcome!
