everything that happens to you is really a matter of perspective. many people are trained to dwell on the negative. I'd like to hope to KINDA think I've trained myself to dwell on the positive. Here's my story:
bike acting funny. take bike to dealer 2 weeks before a track day. dealers calls, says they gotta tear the engine/tranny down. Ok. Fedex the parts, they are good guys, they get it done and I picked it up today. Take it easy on it for a hundred miles they say. After the track day, bring her back and we'll swap out the oil. Sounds good. It also has brand new tires and gotta break THEM in also. So I pick it up and it's kinda sprinkling here and there, this sucks but okay, gotta break the bike in before tuesday to make sure it's all good.
Start it up, sounds great, smooth, fine, seems to rev faster I think. they tell me to keep it below 8000 rpm. I'm fine with that. They swapped out most of the gears and shift forks too.
I'm rolling on the roads doing my usual break in of hard throttle, let off, over and over, seating the rings with some good compression.... Anyway, nothing is skipping a beat. Sounds great. Feels new. Lifts the front wheel when rolling on in 1st and 2nd, I take it through all the gears, they all feel fine. doesn't seem to shift any better or worse than before... that's just typical Busa.
So, I head out south of town onto the new bypass for more RPM cycling and a power test to make sure that power drop problem is gone - yep: no more problems with that power drop.
Now, I don't remember EXACTLY what I was doing at the time, whether I was shifting up or down or accelerating or what, but what I DO KNOW is I was not riding harsh or doing anything abusive.... I'm cruising along at maybe 65-70ish and all of a sudden; "KELANK! SCREEEECH KLANKETTY KLANKETTY KN|LANKETTY SCREEECH KLANKETTY KLANKETY" and of course, I instantly grabbed the clutch and signaled to the side of the road on the right... I could feel the back was not locked up, so I shifted into N even though I was not sure if I could, and killed the engine and costed onto the shoulder. pulled over more, kickstanded, turned the PARK light on since I was 3 feet away from 80 mile an hour traffic.
My newly fixed bike was broke.
I assessed things for a minute and decided it was ok. It can be fixed. It COULD HAVE BEEN a LOT worse. Although the bike felt tighter, better than ever, something was apparently not right. That something COULD have gotten me killed. It could have locked up the rear and skidded me into harms way, something could have blown and hurt me or another vehicle... who knows, I just know it could have been a lot worse.
I counted my blessings. It was a non-event except the horrid noise that came from my new rebuilt engine/tranny. I celled my buddy with his trailer and he was happy to help out. As I waited
I thougth about what happened: SOMETHING was making a terrible noise, but the motor did not lock up, and didn't even sound bad come to think of it. I mounted up, checked to see if it was in Neutral, and put my hand on the key. If it freaks on start, I'll just shut her down. Crank. Sounded perfect, just as good as ever. hmmmmmmmm...... Drop into first. Still sounds fine. NO ugly noises whatso ever. So I roll in first on the sholder with my right blinker going as an eye catcher for about half a mile. I'm not trying second. i thought I heard a "tink" sound while rolling in 1st. Must be the tranny. Something must have been bad or come loose.
Anyway, kinda bummed my ride will not be ready for my track day in Topeka on Wednesday, but glad it was not major or painful. Stuff happens, make the best of it.
My buddy plans to strong arm the dealer into getting me a loaner bike... maybe a gsxr1000. Good luck! neva gonna happen
I plan to take a LOT of pictures at the track. Since I'm paying all this money, I'm gonna go sit on some corners and take a bunch of action shots and video.
Hoping the damage on my bike is not major, and the dealer sucks it up and fixes everything right.
