Knock? (yes, i did a search)

dont know if i missed it in someones prior post, but has anyone checked their idle to make sure it's at 1100-1200. screw sometimes backs off

isn't that kinda high? i thought they were supposed to idle about 900... i could be terribly wrong, so i'm legitimately asking. i think my choke puts my bike about 1200.

hmm.... well sh!t... i did my research, and found / verified on 3 or 4 sites that it does in fact idle at 1200rpm. still sounds high to me, but, in that time, i've adjusted my idle, and wow..... purrs like a kitten now.

i guess i need to get a hold of a manual.

nope 900 way to low, i believe between 1100-1250 is right. if it's even at 1000 and you get on it and then get off it and grab the clutch it will shut down because the rpm's will fall to low. the bike will sound funny if not set correctly also. they say set your tps also in the future. put some lock tight on the idle screw to keep it from backing off again. my bike was doing the same thing at low speed turns, the throttle was twitchy and hesitant. there are a to of posts on this don't know why it took me so long to search for the fix. bike feels great now, real smooth on take offs and at low speeds. being to low will also affect your battery charging, your brake lights will flicker a little. note you dont have to lift the tank on gen I to set the idle. get a long screw driver, look on the right side of the tank to locate the idle screw. i will try to find a pic

Well now I don't feel so bad about that light knocking sound on my 05! I do still think there's a problem with my clutch (which is why I haven't been riding it) since it stalls the bike out when shifting into 1st while it's cold and it takes a second or two to come out of gear when the clutch is pulled. Also, has it's own knocking noise I can feel around the right side peg. Cash has been tight so gotta wait a little longer to take it to the shop. :handball:

Bringing this old thread back to life.

My 07 with 6,000 miles has the same symptoms and has for a while now. It is bugging the hell out of me and has prevented me from riding the bike lately because it has become worse. Now that I found and read this thread I see that a lot of guys are having or had the same issue. But that doesn't make me feel a whole lot better about it. The "clunk" or "knock" is pretty bad now and happens on initial startup and cold idle, or warm idle and low RPM's. When I pull the clutch in the symptoms lesson, but can still be felt. And that has me worried.

Has anyone resolved this issue or are you guys just living with it still? So from what I read its either "Normal", or "Cam tensioner" or "clutch Basket" or " wrong crank bearings" or "needs throttle synched". I would like to hear some more thoughts on this, and hoping to hear from people who have resolved this or at least tamed it down some.

If thats what yer reading has offered,go for it.

Check the cam chain tensioner.
Pull the clutch cover and inspect the whole thing.
Sync the TB's.

Those 3 things will cost you squat, especially if you do it yourself.

Maybe then its "Problem Solved".

Checking the crank bearings will be a little bit more...involved.

Then you might be able to ride, instead of type.:banghead:

RSD.

Add me to the list..my 06 has that knock too..recently received a cam /tension chain adjuster to swap out..my buddy says his 05 runs a lot smoother since changing his

There are very few problems with the third generation oil fed cam chain tensioners. But hey, fill yer boots.

My local shop had a Motion Pro sync tool so I stopped in and picked it up. Cost me $126 out the door.

My throttle bodies were pretty far out of sync. Bike has 5,500 miles on it.

I spent some time and got it dialed in. The fluid was jumping around in the tubes a bit. I should have pushed more fluid into the tubes during the initial calibration of the tool. I did get it dialed in better than this photo shows.

After the TB sync I tested the Throttle position sensor and it did not need adjustment. I went ahead and replaced the spark plugs since I had the airbox out. Then I set my warm idle to 1150, and set my choke idle up to 3500.

The bike is running a whole lot better now. The knock seems to be gone. The TB's were obviously off, and the idle was sitting a little low right at 1,000 rpm.
