Manual fan switch pros and cons

how about you wire it so that it will turn on automatically or manually? all pros and no cons

Thats what i did. My fan will turn on automatically if it gets too hot or I can turn it on manually if i hit traffic.

Run a ground wire from your battery to a switch on your dash and from the switch run the ground wire and splice it into your radiator fan's ground wire. The ground is what triggers the fans to come on.

just make sure to wire it up as a secondary switch for the fans. This way if you forget to turn it on the regular switch will kick them on.

ok I tapped the ground wire ran it to the swich then from the switch i grounded to the frame, so i assume doing it this way the factory switch will still work the only draw back i see is if somebody want to screw with you they can flip the fan switch and kill the battery

So Russell.... first thing... OHHH RAHHHH 1980 - 1988 Semper Fi...

Secondly... I am thinking about doing this to my Gen I. The owner before me wired it to what looks like behind the thermo. All I know is there is two wires taped up. When I toch them together the fan comes on. So I assume he had a switch. I am going to add the switch and connect the wires. My ? is does it REALLY work. So if I roll up to a traffic jam and I instantly hit the switch, will it make a difference if I have to sit in traffic a long time? By turning on the fan before it reaches the temp that it would automatically kick on? Seems like it would but I would like some input...

Thanks!

All you have to do is run two wires directly to the fan relay on the left side of the radiator (Gen 1) . . . run them up to a switch, because that is all the fan relay is. The switch will overide the fan relay, but the system will still operate normally if you do not use the switch . . .:rulez:

Yes it will make a big difference. The bike never reaches the temp for the fans to kick on. And i have a lower temp switch also. The fans will still come on automatically so you dont have to worry if you forget to hit the switch. Even if the bike did hit the temp for the fans to turn on, having turned the fans on manually will not hurt anything.

All temp switch does is introduce a ground to the fans which completes the circuit and they kick on.

Is it by the fuses?

Cool.... Thanks Russell... I can't wait to hook this up and test it out!

I just traced wires on the wiring diagram to see how for sure i had mine hooked up. When i originally wired it i just hooked it up however i could get the fans to turn on and keep the stock temp switch

I basically bypassed the temp switch. When i flip my switch on my dash it triggers the relay to turn on so any switch will work. I originally didnt even know i had wired it into the relay... Guess i did it the right way accidentally the first time

I just doing this mod today. I can't wait to try it out next time I get stuck in traffic or on a parade ride.

One Note: I thought this would be like my LED light switch that comes on if the key is on or not. But it doesn't. The fan only comes on IF the key is switched on. So they can't flip the switch.. it will do nothing until you turn the bike on. I was worried about that in case I had the fan on manually and turned my bike off and went in the house it would still be running.. but it wont! :cheerleader:

It's in the top left corner of the rad.

I did the same.

But I believe it's just a coolant temp switch, not a relay. The switch closes (when the coolant temp in the radiator is high enough) triggering the fan relay to energize, thus turning on the fan.

Yes, the temp switch is the part connected to the radiator, which when hot enough, triggers a relay by the fuse box to turn on the fans
