Just thought I'd give you guys an update on my new house. Can't wait to have a garage.

Very exciting! I remember how fun it was to move into a brand new house! Congrats!

Pretty fun stuff huh? I remember when my wife and I had one built....

Do the surround sound/stereo wiring now....it's cheap now. After drywall is in it'll be a lot more dough. Pre-wire the crap out of the place! Alarm syst...all that stuff. Even if you don't have the cabbage to buy all the gear now, it'll save you $$$ in the end.

Oh yea, have the electrician stub out some lines under the house for outside lights and stuff...that way you'll have a switch inside for all that stuff down the road.:D

Good idea....never thought of that

It's been a few yrs since we built.....I'll remember more stuff before the day is out.....

Oh, on the speaker thing....make sure you wire for speakers on the back.....so you can listen to tunes while out there...

Also, additional insulation is super cheap now. Check and see what r value they plan in putting in...it won't be much to make it better.

Here ya go....Insulate the garage! I think it cost me maybe 300-400 bucks max...made a huge difference! You can also have the HVAC dudes plumb a vent into the garage too...makes workin' out there a lot nicer. Just a little more tin is all!

Have the builders "forget" a few pieces of plywood above the garage...that way you've got at least some floor up there to store stuff. A lot easier to get that plywood up there now.....

Take 'em some 'refreshments' just before they leave for the day...you can get builders/electricians/HVAC/plumbers to do ya all kinds of favors!

Oh, another...put electrical outlets EVERYWHERE!! Also take time to decide where you want water spickets....

I totally agree! I just spent about a day trying to wire my house for surround and it was a pain. Not difficult, but time consuming. Wire up everything you can before the drywall goes in.

OK, thought of another one....before they pour concrete....ya know, sidewalks and shid? Put some sched 40 pipe across areas that you might need to run stuff down the line. ie; irrigation lines....wiring (for yard accent lighting and stuff) whatever. Once again, it is much easier to put the pipe under the sidewalk/driveway BEFORE they pour than after.
Learned that from experience..:p
PVC pipe is cheap. Cut a few pieces to fit, leave 4-5" hanging out on both sides.....mark where it is. Viola! when you need to get across that chunk of concrete...you got it!

Wouldn't that also increase the square footage of the home, by insulating, heating and cooling. Might increase the appraised value, which is a good thing as far a equity goes.

Great idea,
Chris

make sure you put in plenty of cat 5 and rg6 cable as well. if you are going to have HDTV now or in the future and/or sat tv, you'll want to put 3-4 cable drops where your tv is as well (2 for sat, 1 for off the air antenna, 1 extra for whatever cuz its cheap and easy now

).... and probably wouldnt hurt to drop some cat5 back there as well (xbox, psX, HTPC, etc networking). Then pull it all to a central spot so you can easily change/add/etc

Also wouldnt be bad to put an extra cable drop in each room on opposite sides or on "possible" TV walls cuz nothing sux worse than having it in a place that isnt where your TV is once you get set in the house
