Open Carry

i carry a gun alot. almost never for "protection", i carry a gun so i can have fun with my gun. i like shootin stuff. lots of pop cans and bunnies lately. small game season is in full swing. :firing:

i do not open carry very often when in town. most of the time i have one close enough if i ever need one.

You watch your back Russ, you never know when they are gonna jump out.. They'll cut ya, and won't think twice about doin it.. :watching:

Open carry kinda takes away the element of SURPISE. I would rather people NOT know I have a gun on me..

I only open carry when I go into the back country here in Alaska and that's more for protection from the wild life. When I'm in the city I personally don't want the bad guy to know who has a concealed weapon or not. :beerchug:

Everybody knows EVERYBODY in Alaska Carries

If I happen to be a robber in the process of making my living and you happen to be openly brandishing a gun on your hip,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I'm going to shoot you in the head first!

Open carry is not a wise idea unless you are in the back woods of Bear Country in my view!

here in pa you can open carry but citizens make it so emotionaly detremental that to try to attempt to do it is not a good idea. (see soccer mom incident) hence....CCW and the logic of surprise

If you can't reach it from where you are standing then it is not close enough if you need it.

I've always thought that carrying open draws unwanted attention. You will definitely be a target for thugs. In my opinion, concealed is better.

I think open carry laws are a very important part of concealed carry... As stated I don't think there is any real advantage to open carry, however, many states have or have had messy laws with respect to concealed carry. In some states that adopted conceal carry, open carry was illegal hence anyone who accidently bent over and revealed a conceal carry gun was in violation of the prohibition against open carry. This just on example - there are many others variations. So - to summarize if open carry is illegal any time you accidentally revealed your weapon you would be in violation of the open carry laws, therefore it is important aspect of concealed carry. In some very limited cases open carry is preferably - making bank deposits at night etc. - situations where you are in a highly defensive attitude almost expecting trouble. Not passively defensive but in intimidation and offensive protection mode.

I recall driving through NC some years ago and pulled off the interstate in the middle of the night and in the middle of nowhere to get gas - the guy working the graveyard shift had a cowboy sixshooter rig, looked like he just arrived from the OK corral - I had no doubt he could use it and I doubt anyone was willing to find out. Probably a good example of open carry. I just imagined him on the phone once or twice a week with the sheriff - " yeah can ya come on down - I just bagged another miscreant"

I can only imagine the vast difference in treatment one would recieve if they caused a ruckus in the hgwy while carrying openly. Anyone you cut off or got into an altercation with would call and say 'AND HE HAD A GUN!!!!'
At which point instead of being pulled over so they can hear your side you would be stopped by like forty cops all weapons drawn on you. Look into the sun as you take you helmet and sneeze and your Swiss cheese and a bunch of sorries he had a gun. Concealed it would be a lot calmer situation I think.

Are you going to shoot someone who cuts you off? They don't let you post to the .org from prison....that's not the kind of attention I want. And if you commit a traffic violation (speeding) while open carry - do you really want to invite the additional police attention?

Um... I didn't say I was going to shoot anyone because they're bad drivers. Also not sure how I implied that I was out to cause problems. I've barely even had cops glance twice at me, and it's not uncommon to see bikers OC in Arizona. If you aren't breaking the law and act sane, they have no reason to be giving you a hard time.

If you had an opposing viewpoint, just get to it. You don't need to be insinuating that I'm a soon-to-be felon.

SpeedFiend I wasn't saying you were going to. I simply said it as if someone who was open carrying caused a problem. Road rage is all too common and folks over react. They could mistake one gesture for another. If an angry person calls in to report a road rage incident and mentions the person is visibly armed then it will become a much different situation is all Im saying.

Trying to keep the thread on topic, if you have been on any gun forums whatsoever, you will have read the ongoing debate between concealed and open carry. I cannot argue the side for open carry because I have never done so, unless you count my old deer lease. However, I can say that it takes while to get used to either type of carry. Those of you who live in open carry states, good for you. Oklahoma is again considering it, maybe it will happen with the current governor we have in place. But, lets just say that it does pass and you can open carry. I think I will continue to carry, but remain concealed. Maybe just not worry so much about printing. In my humble opinion, I would rather no one know if I am armed. Sure, we can argue the visual deterrent versus the element of surprise. But data backs both arguments so why dont we pee up a rope instead? I would rather like to point out that I am just happy that we can carry lawfully in the states that we live, cept Illinois (sorry semi). So however you do it, do it responsibly, within the law and exercise your 2nd Amendment right.

Just as Blanca said, I didn't say you were a potential felon, either - What I was providing is the PERCEPTION (intentionally over the top) of a majority of the public, and many of them will overreact also. As a staunch defender of the 2nd Amendment, I'm glad you have the right to open carry, but I am also equally certain that concealed would be the smarter choice.

I had a guy last year come into our business and sit down to be waited on with open carry. The office staff was visibly shaken (they actually called me to come up front). Sorry, but he didn't look like the upstanding citizen that I'd hope for, so I asked him if he was a badge, and if not would he mind leaving his weapon in his vehicle (as I am entitled on private property under the law to do). Whether true or not, I predetermined by his look and swagger that he was projecting "look at me, I've got a gun". I have a duty to my employees to provide a safe working environment.

He didn't like it very much, and started the "why don't you feel safer because I AM carrying?" line. My response was, "I'm not trying to insult you, but I don't know you, or have any idea how you were trained, so the only person that's gonna have a gun on this private property is me" and again asked him in the future to leave it outside. All would have been avoided if he was concealed. And I would expect to honor the same request if the situation were reversed, but I would have apologized and taken it outside immediately without the verbal challenge.

Discretion is the better part of valour...
