Passengers?

My wife is distinctly displeased with the Hayabusa. She says she has to lean over too far to get her arms around me, and hanging onto the passenger rail is no fun (I'll vouch for that, she looked very uncomfortable).

Any suggestions, other than telling her to just lean over and deal with it? I've looked at Buddybelts (www.buddybelt.com), they look like a possibility. Have any of you tried one?

Thanks in advance.

One man's garbage is another's treasure. I really like the stock seat for comfort and usefulness. As a commuter, having a split seat is more pratical: for storing my helmet on the helmet lock and securing gear when parking the bike.

My wife likes the stock seat. We recently took over a 500 mile trip and she loved the seat for comfort. The seat is a well thought out design. It is firm to assist the rider in controlling the bike, yet compliant enough for many comfortable hours in the saddle. The material on the seat cover is an unsmooth finish which helps circulate air under your legs and butt. The split seat arrangement allows the passenger freedom on movement independent of the rider and vice versa. With a single type seat on a sportsbike, like the Busa, the passenger, even during normal riding would be sliding down the seat into the back of the rider; and during moderate or greater braking you would compromise control with the passenger smashing into the rider's back.

Falconer: This suggestion might help. A fully loaded tank bag positioned as far back as possible, so that it touches your stomach/or chest (I like the Eclipse Sport model). This will give you added wind protection, something to lean on and it will force you to sit in a more upright position.

buddy belts are for kids to ride with you
not adults
suzuki, whether we choice to believe this or not...
MADE A BIG MISTAKE in the way they made the seat for our bike
separate
like an R1/R6
so corbin, among others, couldn't make a gunfighter and lady configuration for it
therefore, NOT allowing a backrest to be fitted to the bike
big
big
big
mistake
there is too much horsepower for any passenger to ever be comfortable on this bike
make fun of the XX all you want
but the seat configuration is far superior to that of our bike

it's pathetic
suzuki really messed up here
you need to account for a passenger with a bike such as ours

why would you ever put an R1/R6 type of seat arrangment on this kind of bike?

i really don't know

One word.... racing. Suzzuki USA will not officially race the Busa, but I'm sure you will see it soon. Yosh is racing the bike.

The XX was designed for touring, the busa is based on current race technology (GSXR). The only mistake Suzuki made was not putting the R after GSX.

I guess it depends on where you are coming from. My wife is ecstatic on the back, but then I had an R1 before this, so she would have been happy with anything. She was always perfectly happy on the CBR900 and VTR1000 I had before the R1, too.
If you want a sumptious touring bike, buy one – this is a big bore sports bike, with a very comfortable seat for a bike of its style!

My wife road with me the other day. It was her first motorcycle ride ever. I coached her a little and she enjoyed the smooth ride of the busa. We go up to 85 mph on the highway and she didn't feel like she had to bend to far forward. She is medium built lady who I thought would not ride as long as she did. This is the rocket I have owned that I would even consider riding a passenger.

well, first of all, if your riding a bike, you know that it's not the safest thing to do in this world. so, if you are riding someone, especially a loved one, you should be driving completely sanely and safely. you can ride fast all the time when your alone, but hey, don't put your passenger's life on the line any more than you have to anyway. backrest? that's for cruisers. if you can't control your throttle wrist, you shouldn't be riding passengers anyway. i don't know, i've been in a few bike accidents, all of which were other's faults. guess i'm getting over cautious in my old age. but hey, i still blitz with the best of them when i'm alone. so, i guess my point it, when riding a passenger, just enjoy the ride sanely and i'd prefer they hold on to me anyway. nail that throttle with them not quite against that comfy backrest, and watch that thing flip right on top of them and you. think about it.

i agree with all you say
my point is that i think that most passengers want a backrest on this type of bike
it really adds to their pleasure on the back of the bike with the greatest amount of torque ever made.
don't you think that makes sense?
YES, I WOULD TAKE OFF THAT BACKREST WHEN RIDING SOLO
but i know that sudden bursts of acceleration (which our bike is bound to have time and time again) will be better tolerated by the pillion when he/she can feel some support for their back... making them feel more confident that they won't fall off the back

I dont know about the backrest thinging. But my wife too, mention she doesnt like the passenger position AS well as my 92 GSXR1100. She sited the same reasons. The pilot sits to low to get a good grip on my if I do very much agressive riding :) Oh well, will riding with my wife is fun its just a different kinda of fun, I preffer Solo, myself.

falconer, sorry, was not implying anything about your riding style. just that when suzuki designed this bike, it was not with the intention of a passenger's comfort. that was not even secondary. so, i disagree that they made a big mistake in the design. however, i wasn't trying to get you upset or anything like that, and your right, plenty of sport type bikes have after market seat rests for the passenger available. and mark my words, the busa will too. you know corbin will design one that bolts directly in place of the four mounting bolts for the grab rail. it would be extremely simple to design this and would be very safe. once again, no intention of offending. please don't take it that way. unfortunately, i was in a hurry when i wrote it and made a couple of replies in haste that weren't worded properly. please accept my apologies and when i design the backrest, i'll give you the plans for free. deal? lol anyway, good luck and enjoy your riding.

I will be touring with my son on this bike and since I work in a machine shop, am planning to build a billet backrest. If it turns out, I will duplicate cheaply or send ACAD blueprint for free for anyone interested.

well
i wasn't offended one bit
i just wish they'd make something
i've already spoken to corbin
and NO gunfighter and lady seat will be forthcoming...
it won't replace the separate front/back seats of the 'bus
as for the possibility of making a backrest to fit the passenger grab rail holes... i am not sure about it
but i will ask them
or perhaps sargent will do it for us
they are the types who might be interested
there was another company that made a similar product for the original BMW R1100T
i forget whom it was
but i'll call my dealer in the morning and find out

thanks for all the support
the belt idea was ok
but... again
i don't like someone pulling at/on me while i am concentrating on piloting this beast

i think that you all know what i mean

greg

mike,
i appreciate your comments
but... as the rider of 3 bikes
about 15K miles/year
i think i know something about 2-up riding

believe me
i love my wife
i have a 5 year old daughter
so i don't want to put anyone's life at risk on the bike
and...
of course...
i do ride "differently" when with the wife
on the other hand
no one likes to ride holding on the whole time
with a backrest, it is easier to feel comfortable on the back of a bike with even slow acceleration
my wife enjoys g-force as much as i do (almost) and i don't like her hanging on me when i am riding
it's distracting and rather unsafe for proper maneuvering on the bike

and..
as for your comment about backrest being only for cruisers
give me a break
that's a bunch of crap
the XX
the GTS1000
CBR600F2, 3, and 4
those aren't cruisers
there are too many others to name

believe me
suzuki should have designed the seat differently
so that someone could put a single seat with a backrest on it, if they wanted to
with the "inconsiderate" design they have left no option, whatsoever

Here's an idea that you could try, make a belt using either 3" or 4" width nylon material, same type that they use for fanny pack or gym bag handles.Make the belt adjustable for your waist and use qick release buckle like the fanny pack.Make from the same nylon material two strips about 8" or 10" long, take one piece and sew the ends together,"to make a loop",make sure to cross sew the material to make the loop end a stronger seam.Do the same for the other strip, now put both loops into the belt and now your wife can put her hands in the loop and her wrist will be looped in"same principal as wrist strap for power lifters".You can add softer material around the wrist strap for her comfort.Anyways that is an idea I thought you can try.I use the same principal when having my 6yr old daugther riding with me.I use the loops for my weight belt and also put a belt on her and now she's attached to me and i don't have to worry about her falling off.

A backrest could be made easily enough which would mount to the same four bolt holes that the passenger grab bar currently uses.

Falconer if you make your own back rest you can go to the second hand store and get one of those chairs that computer companys use and use the back rest part of the chair since it is already curved and make your own bracket, repad the back rest and you're in business.Alot of the Hitech companys throw their chairs out due to the casters being broken and you might be able to get the chair back rest piece for free.Cut the back rest to size, repad.Another idea is to take a cut out of the back hump"race trunk",shape a leather back rest the style of the hump"use just the tail section to keep the style and have the unit rest against the hand rails and use some kind of snap on strap or maybe you can come up with a better idea for keeping the custom back rest hump on and your wife will have a small back rest to rest on and it will still keep the styling of the bike.Do this, put your hump on the bike, look at it then slowly in your mind remove the plastic that hits your back and you'll visualize what I'm trying to get across.Anyways good luck
