precisely why HIV/AIDS or cancer will not be cured with the help of the major pharmaceutical companies. they have much to gain to keep people alive to buy their medication. although, that doesnt mean someone wont find a cure in time tho. a small pharmaceutical company would be sitting on a multi billion dollar lottery ticket if they discovered a cure for either. there are plenty of companies doing just such but they obviously dont have the funding to expetite their results.

as far as the economy goes I would have to disagree. most people who get cancer get it later in life and many of those people may not have health insurance so the money spent by the government paying for treatment for those without health insurance would surely off set our economy in a postive way because the government could now use the money to help generate growth in the economy.

it would be billions of $$$$$$ saved considering treatment costs, treatment research costs and less money people would have to pay into their insurance policies. and lets not forget about those that spent their life savings on experimental treatments or payed for better treatments. also there would be no lost work wages due to medical leave for cancer treatment.

sure there would be those that lose their job as a result. but many are doctors and would just have to practice something other then cancer treatment.

I use to have the same thought process as busabret until recently... If Steve Jobs didn't have the money to uncover an antidote for himself to magically get better and not die, im quite sure that there isn't one. He was one of the richest people in the WORLD! I still try to keep hope though, although it is hard to do.

but he did live for 7 years. almost all die within 1.5 years. his money I would say definately prolonged his life way longer then most.

with all 4 stages put together the one year rate of survival is 20%. 5 year is only 4%. I would imagine his billion of dollars kept him alive longer then most but not certainly not long enough.

Sure it is. The money spent to quiet him is a token amount compared to the amount to be made in the accepted treatment, research and so forth.
We will never see a cure for cancer, HIV/Aids, Diabetes or any number of other diseases.

Bottom line is there is too much profit in diseases to make cures available. As for me, noone will ever be able to convince me that there are not cures for many diseases we have nowadays and have had for a long time locked up in vault somewhere just sitting there but will never see the light of day because they do not have profit margin that treatment attempts do period.

Yeah Jobs may have been worth $6 billion which yeah probably prolonged his life some but $6B is a drop in the bucket compared to big business. And just between these cpl doz companies they made 4 times more profit in 1 yr than Jobs entire net worth. So if you look at it that way who do you think is running the show?
