As to what you guys have and works well on the Busa.

Why? On my ride this morning I was out on a 4-lane highway doing about 90 in a 65 when a guy on a Harley going the other way waves franticly at me. About the time the speedo settles between 65 and 70 I top a hill and there in the median sets a State Trooper facing my way with his little ray gun. If not for the guy on the Hog I would have been had.
Nice to know there is at least 1 decent Harley rider out there and if I knew who he was I would buy him a beer at the next pub! Thanks dude!

talk to kcwaterbug, he has jammers, detectors, and the whole 9 yards

Whistler makes a detector specifically for motorcycles. It has a 2 1/16" gage face. The it has two antennas on for the front and one for the rear so that you can get true 360 radar/laser notification. It has an optional for your helmet that is similar to the HARD system, wireless as well.

I know ppl are going to say that Valentine and Passport are the best. Something you have to realize is "The Best" is relative. You have to balance "The Best" with price. The Passport is a little more sensative and a little better quality but you pay for it. The Whistler is not a bad unit and is designed for the motorcycles.

Having said all that, I do not have a radar detector on my Busa and probably won't put one on there. My wife used to work for Whistler and I am amazed at how many ppl will buy a radar detector w/o understanding why they are buying what they are buying. Name recognition. I do have Whistlers in both my car and truck, saved us both numerous times.

Anyway, here are a couple of links for you.

My V1, mounted on my Techmount stem stand has paid for itself many many times. I had five 'saves' on one tour alone in Idaho and Oregon. Saves me pretty much every weekend close to home as well. Initial expense is high but compared to the cost of just one, to one and a half tickets, not counting any insurance increase, more than covers the price. I'd rather pay Mike Valentine than the 'State of Collection' anyday. I also wear earbuds so I'm sure to hear the warning before I see the unit light up. Early warning and good brakes are the key to saving $$$ and avoiding LEO contact.

Ordered mine today!

Whistler 'Cruisader' w/ helmet receiver

I am torn between the Whistler and the V1. I will decide between the 2 and order by the first of the week.

Thanks all for the input!

I got a connection for Org members on the Passport Escort stuff.... Hit me with a PM and I'll forward it to ya! Good advice above! Remember that Bel and Passport are the same company!

(schroetf @ Aug. 05 2007,07:34) is the valentine 1 easy to install on busa?
Most of the quality detecors come with "hard wired" options... so you can run permanent wiring right from your battery, fuse box, or asource powered with "ignition on"....

They are not technically diificult. The biggest queston you suould ask yourself is HOW you want it mounted and location. Most people use stem stands, or tank mounted stands and velcro it on.

I opted to permanently afix the suction cup window mount right to the inside of the windscreen. HOWEVER THIS SHOULD BE DONE SO THE DETECTOR RESTS ON TOP OF THE GUAUGE CLUSTER TO PREVENT TO DETECTOR FROM BOUNCING because it will eventually break the metal bracket (ask me how I know)

You also need to consider how you want to HEAR or SEE it. I chose a simple way of splicing it into my MP3 (mounted near the triple tree) audio output. This erminates in an audio output jack under the left side of my seat. I simply plug my earbuds into the jack, run it inside my jacket at the waist and I'm good. I get tunes in stereo and the detector goes off in my right ear - right through the music.

SIMPLE, CHEAP, and it simply WORKS! I'll get pics today of how I mounted the detector and jack etc

Here is a closer pic of the detector.  The wiring runs to the right into a little gap between the guauge bezel at the rubber stripping.  The detector actually rests on the "dash" and clips onto the mount.  I had to have the detector on the mount and position it as I glued it so it is a perfect fit. (I bent the mounting bracket to fit the contour of the windscreen, and used "Goop" clear marine silicone to afix it - A SMALL DROP because it squeazes out the suction cups otherwise - don't ask how I know)

(SpeedGeek @ Aug. 05 2007,13:38) You can see the overall layout here:
I've always been informed that having the unit located behind dark or tinted glass or in this case screen will decrease the effectiveness of the radar to detect.

Finally, here is where I plug my earbuds in.  The MP3 is battery powered, and the detector is wired in to the fuse box using the hardwire accessory available for Escorts.

I like that all the sound is in my earbuds, and total cost for wiring everything: <$50

Radar is unaffected by COLOR of plastic. Radar goes right through plastic and it makes no diference if is clear or tinted.

However laser is blocked (since it is light) from going through the black on the windscreen. I am repalcing this windscreen with a clear one to remedy that. I took a dremel and polished a small "window" in the current windscreen and it now alerts on Laser. Really pretty useless since once they tag you with laser, you are busted *shrug*

The biggest thing this saves me from is the podunk sherriffs/local LEO in rural areas driving with their radar blasting away. Its pretty stupid to be speeding on the interstate and relying on a detector, since almost all staters in Oregon and Washington use laser.

This setup is just my CYA for haulin ass on the backroads. I've picked up rural LEOs running radar over 2 miles before I get to them

I have an Escort 8500-S2 CORDLESS-- If you dont want to mess with wiring- its the way to go- then just get an ear bud- the batteries last a lonnng time.
I bought a Whistler 1725(?) cordless first-- there is no input for earpiece- plus the batts run down in a few days.
Oh yeah- For mounting-- go to H depot or yer fav hdware- and get stickem velcro. Since I always have my tank pack when street riding; I just velcro it to the top-- saved me -- cant even count the times.
