Rear stand - solo?

Understanding there's a trick to getting the back end up on a rear stand by one's self, I got mine home to discover it seems just a little too precarious for me.

Is there in fact a trick, or simply not recommended?

TIA

I do it all the time. Practice with someone to catch it. It just takes a touch. Using the grab rail helps too.

I am righthanded, I grab the grab bar with my right hand, standing with my right side towards the rear of the bike facing to the left side, position the stand with my left hand, and then once the stand is on the spools, push down with the left hand and steady hold/lift with the right, pops right up nicely. I did have my wife help me make sure I didnt muck it up the first couple times. Front stands are trick too!

I'm right-handed also and do mine this way except use opposite hands.

get some wood. nail it together so that when you place it under the kickstand the bike is level. put in 1st gear. use grab rail and push down.

then, get some Stephen Colbert balls when you decided to let her down. good luck!

I also slip a piece of wood under the kickstand while sitting on it to bring it close (but not TOO close!) to level. Then it is just a matter of lining the stand up under the spools and slowly levering it up. I use a cheater (extra length of pipe) in the handle of mine to lever it back down slowly while reaching up with my left hand to lean it towards the kickstand as it goes down. No problem.

Seems like making it way too hard. Park in a Baxley or Condor and lifting is no big deal. Or get a cyclecat and lift off side stand with one hand!

Excellent.  Thanks a million for the replies!

I figured I was just being squeamish, but hey... rather that than looking down at my Busa on its side.

Thanks again.

I used to use opposite hands, but somehow messed up my internal logic, tried it left on the stand it feels more natural.

I've never really given it a second thought it's so easy. I don't even bother removing the hump let alone installing the grab bar.

I reach in the cut out where the frame rail is and level the bike while sliding the stand under the spools with my right hand. Once the spools are engaged and a little bit of downward pressure is applied to the stand I can let the bike go and it's not going anywhere. Push down on the stand and the bike goes right up.
I'm 155 lbs and it's no problem with the Checkered Flag stands that I use.

George:

You saying that you're holding 500lbs at the rear of the bike with your left hand and maneuvering the stand with your right hand? Damn! How about shooting some video of that for us to see... really, I ain't kidding either.

I kinda do the same thing...

Standing on the right side, I reach over the hump into the cutout and grab the frame. Pull the bike toward me to level it and with my left hand, slide the rear stand in and engage it to the spools. Then I put some firm pressure on the stand, adjust my foot position them lift her up. Takes about 15 sec to do if I have the rear stand right next to the bike when I pull in the garage.

I can't believe I took the time to do this.  First I meditated and summoned all 5'7" 155 lbs of strength.  Then I dug out my ancient panasonic camcorder and shot the video.  Popped the "C" tape in the VHS adapter which then went into the old VCR and ran a 15' patch cord to my PC's video card.  Resized it down from 138 megs.  Needless to say I'm not up to date on the latest video equipment and things are a bit washed out and wobbly, but I think it gets the point across.

This is the first time I've ever put any kind of video online so let me know if it works!
