side to side shifting

It will come naturally over time. Lowers your center of gravity & keeps the bike more upright w/ a better contact patch. Get that knee down.

(BUSAFETT @ Sep. 09 2007,19:49) I also felt like when on the left side I couldn't reach the footbrake as easily, and felt like I was laying right over the tank- am I doing this right? Just seemed harder to hang onto the handlebars this way.

Can you tell I'm new at this?

Dude... I am like two feet shorter than you and I have no problem reaching anything... You are over thinking the process. Practice and it will become second nature.
I am actually more comfortable shifting myself off the bike in a turn than I am hugging the tank and staying under the windshield.

(kennym4 @ Sep. 10 2007,02:37) To me my bike feels like it wants to stand up straight on me ? (come out of the lean) I never had this problem on smaller bikes ?
A flat spotted rear will cause the bike to stand up during cornering. Check your rear tire to see that it's still got a nice round profile.

Yeah I think I just may have been too far over-

I have always heard that your (butt cracker) should be on or about the edge of the seat. Use your leg against the tank to hang on, weight forward, and not a death grip on the bars. Also concentrate on smoothness from side to side, not just jumping around like a rabbit.

I can't get around sharp curves (at a respectable speed) without hanging off. This bike is just too heavy for me, although I have recently been counter steering quite a bit more which really helps more than hanging off. I have been told by someone that I resemble a monkey the way I am just climbing all over the BUSA to get her through curves!

P.S., no wise cracks allowed about that last statement. My new

hey Busafett
When we are heavy in twisties like at the dragon .. I lean off the bike and She stayes squared up .... ofcourse she's scraping here pegs....... If I had riding pants I would be at scraping my knee pucks. Its all in what you like... but the best thing we ever did was 2 days at VIR with www.superbikeschool.com

15 - 20 years of riding each and this COMPLETELY changed our lifes...

P.s
you will get all sorts of replies on this but we only ever use the rear brake at the stop light to hold the bike in position.. 9000 miles on each bike and I bet they look brand new!!

i like that "like peeking through a door" statement regarding leaning. my bud used to race and says counter steering is the deal to make the bike turn...

+1 on "it's all what you like". you can sometimes get through a turn faster by leaning less [Twist of the Wrist II] becuase you'll have the bike upright quicker to get on the gas.

Twist of the Wrist II , get it, you wont be disapointed.

The deal is, I'm ok when I ride solo- but I can't keep up with the folks I ride with, and that's been multiple groups. Out on the highways I'm fine, and with open hwy turns- but once we get onto back roads, you may as well tie a boat anchor to my @$$.

It sucks and I'm trying to improve the situation- if I don't learn, I have to wait till the others pull over 5 miles up the road to let me catch up. And I know it's me, b/c it happens with no matter who I'm riding with.

I went out again tonight to practice some more, but I don't feel the bike leaning over any further. I'm usually not this thick so I have no clue what I'm doing wrong. I guess it just takes time.

Right about there is where I stop thinking about the turn, and start thinking about the truck, or other bike to come around the turn, in my lane !!  OH BOY, THIS IS GONNA HURT !!
This partiular turn you can see down the road prior to entering the corner, as it switchbacks and forth. So it's not near as bad as you think. But I understand your concern.

I wanna ride this sunday if your game... We can hit the twisties together if you want... Maybe lcb and kenny4m and busasweety(s) if they are all up for it... Maybe we could head up to JET A's neck of the woods.

One thing that has helped me is to keep my butt planted, but concentrate on leaning forward and over into the corner with my upper body.

When I do this, I'm way low over the tank and I put my face in front of the mirror on the side I'm going to turn towards. So right turn, face in line with right mirror. Grip tank with knees, push down on right peg to help the bike lean, and counter-steer! This gets really cool when your face is three feet off the ground instead of 5-6 feet...

After doing this for a while, it just seems natural to slide the butt over as well as the upper body. I think starting with the upper body helps, I've seen riders hang their butt off, then COUNTER-lean their upper body the other way and TOTALLY negate the idea of hanging off!!

Practice leaning off before you get to the turn, you'll see and feel the bike lean to the other direction to balance. Then when you lean into the turn it feels normal, but the bike isn't leaned over as far so more tire is on the ground.

Any of that help, or muddy the waters further?

It does help, and I actually think I know what I'm doing wrong.. toward the end of tonight's ride, I only then thought to lean my face forward like you are saying- I think maybe even tho I'm leaning left or right now for the turn, I wasn't moving far enough forward w/my upper body like you are saying. I did it on one of the last turns before getting to the house and said to myself "is THAT what I'm missing???" It hit me then that every pic I've seen of AMA riders shows them with their face planted almost into that windscreen, OR the mirror like you're saying- will continue my training tomorrow.. Thanks all for the support, and hope I don't sound like tim-MAY the handi-rider!!!

Doesn't everyone counter-steer ? the only time you actually steer the bike is at parking lot speeds. Any faster the centrifical force kicks in then, thats where counter-steering comes in .You then push the bars in the opposite direction that you want to go, which in effect causes you to lean the way you want to go....
all_coholic.gif
Does that sound right ?

I hear about people using the term "counter-steering" all the time .....But really, we all do it naturally or we wouln't be riding very long..unless it was in a straight line..lol
