Sport Rider magazine editor/columnist went down...

I did receive an update today. It appears there is a sliver of hope but realisticly, Andrew will most likely remain a paraplegic for the remainder of his life. From what I hear, the doctors say it is possble he may get some feeling in his lower extremedies but not very likely.

I also understand there will be a donation site set up soon. I'll post up the address as soon as it's available. Lord knows Andrews medical bills will most likely exceed a small country's GNP.

And you safety nazi's who seem to gloat in the wake of a poor soul's misfortune, PLEASE take it some place else if you MUST argue and bicker over who should or who could have done what and/or it would never have happened.

ty for the update.

My prayers go out for him. This is very sad. It will def. make me a little more cautious the next time i go out.

Waiting for better news...

Get well fully and soon, Andrew...

As for the testing. All the major Mags test street tires on both the street and the track and they never get a permit or police escort because they don't need one. The street test is conducted within the law, just like a ride that you or I take. You cannot effectively judge a tire unless you put it in the exact conditions it is meant to be used for. They don't push the limits during a street test, rather they're judging the tire when you're NOT pushing it. How does it warmup? What does it feel like? How does it steer? How many street riders really push their tires?? Not many. If the mags need a permit to do a street tire test, then all of us need a permit every time we ride.

I believe wht you say 100%

on that note though, a "street" test in Cali is useless for us guys here in the north east,we have to deal with alot of conditions cali roads will never see...Rain,ice,potholes from all the salt used to melt snow and ice, cold roads and im sure theres others.
I would take the results from a "track" tested tire over a "street" tested tire any day.if all tires were tested the same one could just desipher the differences for their own use and the way they ride and apply the results to the street.

That's true, but Sport Rider is located in Los Angeles. So all the street and track testing is done nearby :beerchug:

a simple permit for 1 hr to close a road (weather you think its possible or not) would have prevented this.

A smarter car driver not doing anything illegal (besides being underage, making The U-turn) would have prevented all this.

as for the speeding part,no one said he was speeding but if you have the proper permits and safety ppl standing by im sure its doable, just comes down to cost and apparently cost is an issue for the magazine he works for.

Unless you ever worked for or had firsthand knowledge of the work ethics andrew's magazine company enforces you really can't say anything about them except speculate.

No one knows if he was excessively speeding but going by what Charlesbusa said we can probably say he wasn't. Then even though he was "Testing" tires, he was out in a environment you and I face every time we ride and faced a all too real possibility you and I know exist. Streets are not safe. He was in the same danger we all accept and take chance with whenever we leave our driveways.

So unless you get permits to clear your street whenever and whereever you ride or only track ride Dev, your not doing anything better then what andrew was that day.

thats terrible news

but

If you remember about 9 weeks ago I posted a 21yr old co worker was in an accident (car made U-turn in front of him) Dr's gave hime a 1% chance of survival, thats not a typo...1%. he goes home today!!! only thing misiing is a lung. he was in a drug induced coma for 6 weeks while they performed one surgery after another, finally they stictched him up and weened him off the drugs and said, lets see what happens, what happened was he woke up and 2 weeks after rehab he is going home.

so, you never know,we can only hope for the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Praise GOD for that! :please:

We need harsher laws to protect people. Cagers and bikers alike. If you perform an illegal maneuver and cause an accident, then well it's no accident, it's on you buddy.

I saw amputate the driver from the waste down. Eye for an eye son!

sorry was searching for how to wire a remote start for my busa and came across this thread. Please don't flame me for doing some voodoo resurrections on dead threads, I just hate cagers :(

While we're bringing up dead threads, I'd like to point out that the magazine posted an article about what happened last month and no, he wasnt doing any extreme riding or high speed manuvers, just testing out things like ride comfort and traction over bumps and uneven surfaces...you know...road riding. So for those that were trying to say he wouldnt havce wrecked if he wasnt treating the road like a race track....check facts before posting accusations please.

Damn man, that's awful! Andrew is a great guy with a ton of motorcycle knowledge. I've read his book on Suspension Tuning about six times and read all his articles I can find. I have huge respect for this guy!

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery!

You know I am just poking fun Tuf :poke: but... why 6 times?

Very sorry to hear this....Like Coldstone said...every time we leave our drive way's. Out into harms way we go...Darn i wish it wasn't so...
Wishing you the best Andrew. :usa:

Hmmm after reading all the posts, here are my thinking. Is the tyre meant to test on the road? And no other place else?If due to whatever reasons it must or have to test on the highway due to road conditions are not the same i guess.More safety preventions must be taken as the saying goes its better to be safe than sorry and preventions is bette than cure.Look here no matter what the speed are or how good of the skills a person can have accidents will still happen depending on situations.Even though Andrew maybe compensated enough its still not worth the pain and all that he is going through now and in the future. The company i felt should have done more than just let this staff test the tyres like that.I totally agree with DEVLDOG,although many would seem that its exaggerating, pointless, troublesome and etc...Its lives at stake here.Who knows he maybe the sole bread winner of the house.Well enough said prayers sent to Andrew.Speedy recovery Andrew

Info on the fund. Note the last line...

Editorial Note: Former racer Trevitt has been transferred to a rehab facility where he is learning to live in a wheelchair.

Hope for a miracle
