Stealership Encounter

(mjn @ Nov. 25 2006,14:31) PROFIT IS NOT A DIRTY WORD FOLKS!
depends on how you look at it..."profit" equals greed and that in it's self is a sin.

personally I would rather that ALL money be abolished.
Too many people get out of bed everyday just to exsert their greed on others and the rest get up to meet the greed OF others.

How many do something because they have a talent would keep doing it without compensation?
I dunno ...

Proverbs 14:23
All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

Proverbs 21:5
The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.

Proverbs 31:18
She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.

Ecclesiastes 5:9
The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.

(bitabur @ Nov. 29 2006,01:15) mjn, you work for a dealership in WA?  You sound pretty familiar with the process.

If so, which one?
I work at Overturf VW/Audi/Kia, in Kennewick, Wa.

(USN05LE @ Nov. 25 2006,10:16) You guys blame the stealership but stop and think about it.  What is their job?  They are not in business to save the consumer money.  I feel for the guy, but his ignorance is not the fault of the dealer.  JMHO

Don
Simply put, I paid more than I normally do for vehicles because of My lack of Due Diligence. My fault, not the Dealerships. That being said, It actually helped me in the long run as I no longer take anything for granted. When I got my latest truck I saved over 10K! I basically saved enough on the truck to pay for the Busa.
What's the saying, @$#! me once shame on you, @$#! me twice shame on me ...

That is a beautiful, happy, pie in the sky idea there man.

I fully support our capitolist society.

Without profit, we cannot purchase food to sustain ourselves...let alone fulfill our wants, like motorcycles..

Profit is what makes the world work.

Sorry man, but profit is not a sin. It is what makes the world go round. I don't know anyone that works for free. I know I don't.

Greed has nothing to do with money. Greed is a sickness that will rear it's head wether money is in the picture or not. It is a character flaw.

No. I know no one that would do his or her job without compensation....unless they were already independently weathy to start with....

Being Self-employed I fully understand that when you sell something you must sell it for enough profit to make it worth your while and at the same time not steal from your customer.
This is the same approach I take when purchasing anything of value. I decide what I want, whatever it is and I also decide what bells and whistle's I must have on/in/with it. When you are discussing Vehicles it is amazingly easy to find out their approximate true cost. I then figure out what I can afford before I go shopping so as not to waste OUR time. Then I go the the dealership closest to me, advise him of what I want and see if it is available there (not all online inventories are accurate). If not, I decline their offer to locate one as the best price can be had on in-stock items. When I find my vehicle, I take out my notes and explain to the salesman the information I have at hand and make them an offer on the truck before any paperwok is done. The information at hand includes estimated value of my trade in for my area and the interest rate available to me from my credit union. I tell him to take my offer to the sales manager and see if we can do business. This usually prompts a visit from said manager. I allow them to counter offer a couple hundred bucks higher for the vehicle and a few lower for the trade and it is usually a done deal. You can save quite a few dollars by eliminating dealership born add-ons but remember they've gotta make a profit. it's OK to pay $20 more for window louvers but it's NOT ok to pay $300 for window tint. If approached without emotion everybody wins. If they can't meet my necessary number, I stand up, offer them a handshake and proceed toward the exit. Sometimes they change their minds and sometimes they don't. Either way it has been a pleasant, professional and short visit.
If going after a vehicle I am not familiar with, I spend a little time at the dealership investigating the vehicle to make sure it is worth the work and investment. Be up front with the salesman as to why you are there and offer them a chance to get somebody else to assist you. Being honest and up front goes a long way. Sometimes they are awaiting a "done deal" to arrive shortly and don't really have the time to give you the information you'll find helpful in making a wise decision. It's ok to get passed on. Just be sure to return to the salesman that helped you when it's time to buy.
I could write chapters as I have purchased 21 vevicles for myself friends and family over the past 18 years. I stupidly did not apply my first rule of buying when I got my Busa ... leave emotions at home.
FYI, from first sight of the busa to signed papers was 1 hour and two phone calls. One to the insurance company for a quote and the second to the wife to let her know she just lost her parking spot in the garage... not one of my smartest buys, but by far the best toy EVER!

(Johnnycheese @ Nov. 25 2006,07:40) remember the reason dealerships are the way they are is because of YOU, you want the bike for cost, parts for cost so they have to make money somewhere so..... they cut cost in service which in turn pays good wrenchs squat. so there you have it poor service and then that still won't pay the bikks because poor service means no one wants to have anything done there so you get high part prices, All so you can have the bike at cost.
Rememeber next time when you complain , look in the mirror first.
I'd like to see the dealer who sells anything at cost. They're not stupid, but you have to be shrewd to get them down to the lowest price.

You are reminding me of the scene from Fargo, where the dealer is trying to sell some guy "True Coat," and claiming that they apply it at the factory and he can't reduce the cost.

Good wrenches make good money when they do good work (in my opinion) and they mostly work in independent shops. They live or die by their competence. Finding a good wrench is as hard as finding a good doctor. The last place I look for a good mechanic is at a dealership.
